Description

IE. A. KIR NDALL.
STAPLE. APPLICATION FILED MAB.15, 1911.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912.,
WITNESSES UNiTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIT-A. KIBKENDiALL, F BAKER, OREGON STAPLE.
i Specification of Letters ratent.
Application filed March 15, 1911. Serial No. 614,668.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIT A. 'ICIRKEI'Q:
DALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baker city, in the county of Baker and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staples;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the or,removed from the post, and, a further object is to provide a reinforcing section for said head. 7
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, Figure l is a perspective view showing the staple applied to use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the staple, and, Fig. 3 is an edge elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the. several views, 1 indicates axstaple, which is of the usual formation, andxQ indicates the neck formed integral with .the closed end 3 of the staple.
Formed integral with and extending a distance on each side of the neck is a head 4, that face of the head adjacent the staple being tapered to increase the thickness of the head at its juncture with the neck,
thereby providing a reinforcing section 5 n opposite sides of the neck.
-quickly introduced into In applying the staple to use, it is placed over the wire 6 in the usual manner and the points driven into the post 7 bydelivering blows on the head .4, said head providing a convenlent surf ace upon which to dehver the blows.
If it should be desired to remove the staple, it can be readily accomplished by introducing any suitable object between the post and head and directing outward pressure thereon and although the strain may be at one end of the head, yet it will be prevented from breaking off at its juncture with its neck-by-providingthe reinforcing section.
This form of staple is peculiarly adapt- Patented Apr. 23, 1912.
able for use in parts of the country where long stretches of wire fences are used, from the fact that the staples can be quickly withdrawn from the post and the wires disposed on the ground for a distance so that by saving the travel of a number of miles .to reach the end of the fence, and, it will likewise be seen that the staples can be place to again secure the wires to the post.
What I claim is:
A staple having a neck integral with the curved po'rtion thereof and flattened upon opposite sides, and a head integral with the neck portion and extending tral'lsversely forsome distance in opposite directions beyond the flattened sides of the neck, said head being cf circular form in cross section and beveled outward from the flat sides toward'the oppositeends of the head.
In testimony whereof I Have signed my name to this specificati ii in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
