Be it known that I, CHARLES LAnoREAUx, a citizen of the United States of America.

lresiding at Glassport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvanimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scythes, of which the. following is a. specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying, drawing.

This invention relates to scythes, and more particularly tov a fastening;r means for delachably connecting theblade of the Scythe to the handle bar.

The primary object of my invention is the provision ot a posit-ive and reliable means,`

in a manner as will be hereinafter Set forth` for detachably and adjustably connecting a Scythe blade to the handle bar, without resorting to an expensive construction.

Another object of this invention is to provide a blade fastener that is durable, not liable to injury by ordinary use, easy to nianipulate. and highly eilicient for the purposes for which it is intended.4

With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novcl construction, combination, and arrangement of parte to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding` parts throughout the vseveral Views, in which V Figure t is a side elevation of a Scythe in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan of the blade fasteners. Fig'. 3 is a cross sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is n perspective view of a detached rlamping plate, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a detached bolt..

The reference numeral l denotes a handle bar haring a handle 9.. Riveted, or otherwise connected. as at 3` to one end of the bar l is a tubular holder 4, preferably made of an ordinary piece of tubing. The holder Ll is rut or shearcd upon one side, as at 5 and tho eut or shcared material bent outwardly to provide lateral lugs 6 and 7, the latter being of a greater area than the former. These lugs are oppositely disposed, and the lug T is provided with a plurality of openings S.

I reduce the expense of inamlfucturing the blades and provide a more durable holder, owing to the fact that the same is made ot' malleable metal and is capable of withstanding hard use.

iVhat I claim is 1. In a fastening means forthe blade of a Scythe, a tubular bolder out and sheared to provide lateral lugs with one of said lugs having openings formed therein, an eye-bolt adjustably held within said holder, and a plate held by said eye-bolt and having project-ing ribs adapted to adjnstably and detachahly engage and retain the shank of a Scythe blade in engagementwith said lugs.

2. l'n a astenino' means for the blade of a Scythe, a tuhularholder having an opening 4formed therein, a clamping plate arranged over said opening and adapted to support the shank of a Scythe blade, said plate pro vided with converging ribsfor engaging the shank of the blade to secure the latter in position, and means including an evebolt housed with said holder for retaining said clamping plate and tlievshank of the Scythe blade in engagement with said holder.

3. In a fastening means for a Scythe blade, the combination with the blade having a tapering shank of a tubular holder provided with a pair of lugs, one of said lugs having openings, a clamping plate mounted upon said lugs and engaging 1n one of said openings and provided with a air of converging ribs disposed op )osite y with respect to said shank and orming a means tor retaining the shank from longitudinal movement in one direction, and means engaging with said holder for connecting the platey and shank to the holder.

4. In a fastening mea-ns for a Scythe blade, the combination with the blade having a tapering shank, of a holder, a clamping plate positioned upon and adjustably engaging with said holder, said plate provided with a pair of ribs converging in corre' spondence with the taper of the shank and engaging with the shank to prevent longitudinal movementthereof in one direction, and means for securing the shank and plate to said holder.

5. In a fastening means for a Scythe blade, the combination With the blade having a tapering shank, ofv a holder, a clamping plate positioned against and adjustably en gagingWit-h said holder, said plate provided with a pair of ribs converging in correspondence with the taper of the shank and aging with the shank to prevent longi eno tudnal movement thereof in one direction7 and an eye-boltcarried by the holder and engaging the plate and shank for connecting them'to the holder.
