Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 20, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AARON G. JONES and PETER K. MILLAR, citizens of the United States, residing at Cornish, in the county of Jefferson and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rails, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to improvements in railway rails, the object of the invention being to provide a substantially continuous rail of a peculiar construction whereby each of the rails has one of its ends formed with a pocket and the opposite end formed with a projecting tongue adapted to be received within the pocket of the contiguous rail, thus providing means for preventing the gripping of the rails, the lateral movement of the same at their points of juncture, as Well as preventing the bending of the rails due to the, rolling stock passing thereover, thus materially adding to the strength of the rails, as well as to the comfort of the traveling public.
With the above objects in view, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention progresses, the. improvement resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, accompanying this specification, there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improve ment, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of rails constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view upon the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view taken upon the line H of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the ends of the rail. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the opposite end of the rail. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken upon the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Among the objects of the present invention is the provision of a rail joint wherein fish plates and analogous securing devices are dispensed with, and in the accompanying drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the meeting ends of a pair of rails. It may here be stated that each of the rails 1 and 2 has its opposite ends of a formation as illustrated in the figures of the drawing, but for the purpose of illustration, only the ends of the rails are shown.
The rails 1 and 2 each comprise a head 3, a web 4 and a base flange 5. The web 4 of the rail section 1, adjacent the end of the said section, is of a greater thickness than are those of the ordinary rails, and both the upper and lower faces of the base flange 5 are likewise enlarged. These enlargements project beyond the ends of the rail proper, but are integrally formed therewith, and the said extending portions are adapted to serve as a chair or pocket for the end of the coacting rail, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The pocket which may be designated by the numeral 9 is provided with an abrupt shoulder 8 arranged near the vertical longitudinally extending walls of the said pocket, the said shoulder being the terminal of the head of the rail, and the central portion of the web. The space between the web enlargements beyond the shoulder is of a width sufficient to snugly receive the web 4 of the coacting rail, while the head of the rail, as well as the central portion of the web, are recessed to provide an abrupt transverse wall 6, and a vertically straight longitudinal wall 7. The pocket provided between the enlarged longitudinally extending web, and the wall 7 is of a size sufficient to snugly receive a reduced extension or tongue 15 provided upon the extremity of a cooperating rail 2. This reduced portion 15 is formed by recessing the extremity of the rail 2 to provide substantially one-half of a rail, or in other words, the extremity of the rail may be sawed centrally and longitudinally a distance equal to the distance between the shoulders 6 and 8 of the rail 1, the recessed portion 15 terminating in the right angular shoulder 13. The end of the reduced portion 15, which may be designated by the numeral 16 is adapted to abut against the wall 6, when the section 2 is inserted in the pocket 9, while the shoulder 13 abuts against the shoulder 8.
The web enlargements 10 of the rail section 1 are provided with transversely arranged registering openings, the same ada pted to aline with similar openings formed in the tongue and in the web of the rail section 2, and all of these openings are adapted to receive suitable securing elements, such as the ordinary bolts and nuts.
Having thus fully described the said invention, what we claim isz- The combination of the meeting ends of a pair of railway rails, one of said rails having enlarged longitudinally extending integrally formed Webs, and base flange, the said enlarged portion being recessed to provide a pocket, the said pocket, comprising a straight Wall, and an opposite shouldered Wall, the reduced portion of the said shouldered Wall including a portion of the head of said rail ends, the second rail end having its extremity laterally reduced to provide an v extending tongue, the said tongue adapted to be received Within the reduced portion of the pocket, and the portion of the rail beyond the tongue adapted to be received Within the enlarged portion of the pocket, and means for retaining the rail end Within the pocket.
