To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, ANKER S. LYHNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Detachable Chain Guides for LampeSockets, of whichV the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chain guides for pull sockets, more particularly to chain guides which are offset from a central position on the socket shell or arranged in a posit-ion more or less approximately tangential thereto in order to permit of a straight pull upon the chain for operating the switch mechanism, as distinguished fro-m those which are so arranged as to cause the chain to leave the socket at a cent-ral point and in a direction substantially radial to the socket shell. Such centrally arranged chain guides are objectionable and their use has, in most cases, been discontinued for the reason that they require that the chain change its direction after passing through the chain guide into the shell, it being understood that the switch mechanism is usually so constructed and arranged within the shell that the part to be moved by a pull on the chain is located at one side of the axial center of the socket.
The invention has for its object to provide an offset chain guide which is of simple and inexpensive construction, which can be easily and quickly removed from the socket shell for purposes of refinishing the shell or of replacing a broken chain or cord without necessarily removing the insulating blocks and parts carried thereby from the shell, and which when in position is se curely retained therein.
These and other objects of the invention, together with means whereby the same may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of one form or embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it beingunderstood, however, that the particular construction shown and described has been chosen for illustrative purposes merely and that the invention is not limited thereto.

Fig. 3 is a view of the part-s of the shell detached, the bell of the chain guide being partly broken away to show more clearly the construction of the base thereof. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the clialiln guide complete and detached from the s e For convenience the invention is herein shown as applied to a socket shell of the type shown and described in my prior Patent No. 969,486, granted Sept. 6, 1910, although it will be obvious the specific type of shell to which the invention is applied is immaterial.

the two being held together by the interen- `gagement of overlapping angular tongues `upon the two members.
14 denotes the tongues on the body and 15 those on the cap, these tongues being formed by cutting angular slots in the metal of the members and either raising or depressing the metal inclosed by the angles of the slots. The cap having been placed over the body the members are locked by giving them a slight relative rotation causing the tongues 14 and 15 to interlock.
16 denotes a slot in the body of the shell extending inwardly from the upper edge thereof.
17 denotes the chain by which the switch mechanism of the socket is operated and which passes through the chain guide which will now be described. This chain guide comprises a base 18 and a bell 19 projecting therefrom. Extending outwardly from the edges of the base 18 in a direction substantially parallel thereto are attaching lips 2O and 21. These lips are preferably formed integral with the base 18 and the lips 20 are offset from the lips 21 transversely of said base and in opposite directions with respect thereto. The base 18, when the guide is in place, is located in the slot 16, and the lips 2O and 21 engage respectively the outer and inner surfaces of the wall of the body 12 at the edges of said slot. As will now be seen when the cap 13 is removed the base 18 of the chain guide can be readily slid into and out of the slot 16 and is locked in position in said slot .by the cap 13 when the latter is attached to the body 12. The base 18 will preferably be formed of mate* rial of substantially the same thickness as the material of the shell and the lips 20 and 2l will be offset in opposite directions from said base by substantially the same amount,

The openf ing 23 communicates with the throat or mouth 24 of the bell 19, whoseneck 25is attached to the flange 22 in` any suitable way, as by soldering or brazing, so as'to form an acute angle with the base 18 and with the radius of the shell.
