To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANK L. FOWLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing in the forming. the inner end of the lamp bulb, a
1 novel construction of a sleeve adapted to interlock with the lamp bulb and with the base, and a novel construction of locking means onthe lamp base.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more clearly appear in the detailed description of my invention.
For'the purpose of illustrating my inven tion, I have shown in the accompanying drawings those forms'thereof which are at present preferred by me, since the same will be found'in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited except by the scope of the appended claims to the precise a1- rangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawings.
-1 designates the incandescent bulb of an electric lamp embodying my invention. The rear end 2 of the bulb 1 is closed and carries the filament post 3 in any desired manner.
.The side walls of the bulb near its rear or inner end are laterally deflected, as at 1, and as shown are pressed inwardly at one or more places to form recesses 5 into which the corresponding shaped portions "6 of a sleeve or collar 7 are adapted to fit. The portions 6 form locking members which are made by inwardly deflecting the wall of the sleeve 7 at the proper places. The sleeve 7 has at its lower edge a bead 8, and slits or slots 9 are provided in the sidewall of the sleeve 7 and open through its upper end.' 10 designate pins. or. looking -members extending outwardly from the-gouter periphery of the sleeve 7 and located in proximity to the bead 8. 11 designates a lamp base which may be of any desired or conventional type and Which'is provided with a forwardly projecting'annular flange 12 which is outwardly defle'ctednear its forward end, as at 13, in order to form an internal annular groove 14. The annular flange 12 has portions thereof outwardly deflected to form an angularly extending groove15 1of-the bayonet type which is open at its'lower endin ordertoreceive the pins 10. Theannular flange 12 is connected with but insulated from the screw threaded portion 16 by means of the insulation 17. To the contact plug 23 is connected the rear lamp terminal 18 while the other terminal 19 is connected with the screw threaded portion 16. In some cases in practice, insulating material, such as solder, as indicated at 20, is applied to the locking member 7 in order to prevent the disengagement of the parts. The bulb is sealed in the usual manner at 21.
In the embodiments seen in Figs. 4 and 5, I
instead of employing the locking members 10 the-side wall of the sleeve 7 is outwardly deflected to form the locking members 22 which may or may not be resilient.
It will be understood from the foregoing that the incandescent bulb may be of any.
desired or conventional type and may be provided with any conventional or desired type of base, the only difi'erence, bemgthat the rear portion of the bulb is provided rear end of the incandescent bulb and the locking member 6 will spring into the recesses 5 in the bulb, so that the sleeve 7 and the incandescent bulb form a unit of structure. The sleeve 7 is then inserted into the flange 12 so that the locking members 10 will pass into the angularly inclined slot 15 and the bulb is then turned so that such locking members will be seated in the slot, as indicated in Fig. 1. The filament terminals are connected in the manner shown and sealing material, as 20, is then applied to preventth'e disengagement of the parts.
In case the filament becomes broken or burned out a new filament may be readily inserted in the following manner The sealing material 20 is removed and the collar 7 disengaged from the flange 12.
Therear end of the incandescent bulb 1 is then cut away. The filament post is then removed from the bulb and a new filament connected therewith. The rear end of the bulb is then sealed. The forward end of the bulb 21 is unsealed and after the proper vacuum is obtained it is sealed up and the lamp is ready to be assembled in the manner hereinbefore described.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that T have devised novel means for interlocking the incandescent bulb with respect to the lamp base so that in case the filament becomes, broken or burned out, the parts may be readily disconnected and a new fila ment inserted without necessitating the throwing away of any of the parts, such as for example, the base, the bulb or the filament post.
It will -now be apparent that l[ have devised a new and useful electric lamp which embodies the features of advantages enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and
while ll have, in the present instance, shown and described preferred embodiments thereaaeaeae of which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or locking member, in combination with a base having a flange provided with means to interlock with said locking member.

In an electric lamp, a bulb having spaced deflected portions, a sleeve having its sides slit and having spaced deflected portions to interlock with the deflected portions of said bulb, and having a locking member, in combination with a base having a flange provided with means to interlock with said locking member, and means to prevent the unlocking of said sleeve and flange.
3. In an electric lamp, a bulb having an inwardly deflected recess forming portions near its rear end and spaced from each other,, a split sleeve having a locking member to seat in said recesses and having an outwardly extending locking member, and a base having a flange to receive said sleeve and having a groove to receive said outwardly extending locking member.
4:. In an electric lamp, a bulb having a plurality of concave recesses formed near its rear end, a sleeve having its sides split and having a plurality of convex locking members to engage the walls of said concave recesses, said split sleeve having an outwardly extending locking member, and a base having a flange to receive said sleeve and having a groove to receive said outwardly extending locking member.
