MARTIN 'A Rown, oF MA-RTINSVI'LLE.ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No.102,323, dated April 26, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN cRANk-Mo'rIoN..
The' Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
tions of the wrist-pin relatively t-o the axis aboutwhich it revolves, while revolving. Similar letters of reference indicate lcorresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention and improvement in cranks for driving various kinds 'of machinery consists in applying a wrist-pin to a reciprocating arm or slide whichvis actuated by means of a' stationary elliptical guide and'swivel-dogs, in such mannerthat the wristpinwill travel in an elliptical path in its revolution about an axis, as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to .understand my invention I will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings- A represents a crank-wheel which serves as a balance-wheel, and also as a support for a slide, B.
This slide B is arranged diametrically across one side of wheel A, and kept in place 'by the blocks a a a a, which latter will allow the slide free endwise mo- D is-the shaft of wheel A, to which this wheel is keyed; and
S S is an oblong slot which is made through slide B for receiving'through it shaft D.
The wrist-pin, to which a pitman is applied, is se, cured to the slide B near one end, 'and extended through an oblong slot, p, so as to project from the surface of wheelA A, opposite the side on which the slide is applied, as shown in figs. 2 and 3.
C is an elliptical guide, which is secured rigidly to the frame which supports the shaft D, and which is designed for movingslide B, and causing its wrist- `pin to describe an ellipse in its revolution about the axis of shaft D.
To eect this movement of the wrist-pin W, I con-V neet the slide B to the elliptical guide C by means of two swivel jaws which are 'respectively pivoted to a swivel-plate,
The plate E is connected to slide B by lmeans of a pivot, fr, shown in tig. 2; 4and the jaw g is connected to plate E by means of pivot i.
This jaw gis applied s'o as to slide against the inner =sideof the elliptical guide G, and the impingingsurface of this jaw is slightly rounded, seas to accommodate itself to the shape of said guide.
The jaw which slides on the outer side of the elliptical guide' C consists of a central portion, e, and two curved spring arms, e' e', which parts will accommodate themselves to the shape of the guide C in their revolution around it.
The jaw e e' e is'pivoted at j to the swivel-plate E.
It will be seen from the above description that as the wrist-pin'- is revolved 'about the axis of shaft D it will describe the ellipse indicated by dotted line y, in
iigr, thereby practically increasing the length ofcrank in its passage through every alternate quarter of its revolution.4
Having described my invention, y
That I- claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination ofthe crank-arm or slide B, wrist-pin wheel or crank A, elliptical guide 0, and connecting devices between the` said slide and the guide O, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The swivel-jaws g e e' e', applied to a swivel- ,plate E on the wrist-pin slide B, in combination with the elliptical guide O, substantially as described.
