Description

' initrd @getanzt @anni @Mina Lettc'r's Patent No. 102,2
92 ma Apre 26, 1870.
oop-
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and )making part of the same,
To all whom it may concern keepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementv in Trunks; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledin the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part ot' this specication.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction and arrangement of trunks adapted. for supporting. the cover when raised in a vertical or nearly vertical position on the topl of the back part of the bottom; and
- It consists in supporting the cover on trunnions in ears or bearingsV attached to thebottom, and constructing the rear parts of the top on curved lines struck from the axis of the trunnions, which are a'rranged relatively to the back, so that `the tops will swing readily thereon inv raising or closing to the required position. 1
vIt also consists in providing a vertical projection to the back of the bottom, rising Yup to 'and fitting the curvature of the back of the top, to makeA afinished appearance and close the space above the line of the main part of the top caused by the curvature thereof; and
It further consistsin the combination with the two parts arranged as above of one or more hooks for holding the tops in the elevated position. A
Figure 1 is a frontelevation of a trunk constructed according to my invention, and
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same, with the top in the elevated position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the bottom, which may he of any common or approved construction.
B is the top, the rear C of which is constructed in semicircular form. It is pivoted in the axis EA of the said semicircle to the ears D attached to the ends of the bottom part, and rising above the said bottom to the center of the vertical line of the top, when closed.
*Thepback F of the bottom is raised above the ends and sides to lit snugly against the curved back of the top. It will be seen that, by this oonstruction and arrangement of parts, the top or longest side ofthe part B will, when the latter is open, be in the same vertical plane with the back of the body A. v
The ears'are made broad .and rise at the rear as high as the top of the back F, to strengthen it and iuclose the spaces H and lmake a finished appearance. The front upper corner Iof the top is curved to make a symmetrical appearance of the same, but this is not essential.
L is a hook pivoted to the end of the bottom at theiuside, and having a notched end rising up to engagewith a stud, M, in theend of the top to hold itin the vertical position. "Each end may have one oi' 'these hooks.
.The recess or cavity which would exist valong the vback of the trunk above the top of the bottom, by
reason of the curvature of the back of the top,is so filled .out bythe extension of the back F that, whether open or closed, a symmetrical appearance is presented at the back.
This improvement is applicable to wash-stands and other like articles of furniture having tops opening up in like manner.
Having thus desclibed my invention,
I. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The top 'of a trunk, wash-stand, or other like article, provided with a semicircular back O, andpivoted to the ears D attached to the bottom, and arranged substantially as specified.
2.. The hooks L pivoted to the ends of the body A of the trunk, and slotted'at their opposite ends to it over the studs M of the top B, whereby to support the latter in a vertical position on its pivots, all as shown and described.
3. The arrangement, with the bottom Aand top B, of the vertical extension of the back F, all substantially as specified.
lhe above -specification of' my invention signed by'me this 30th day'ot' December, 1869.
