To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELMER E. SoHnLLnN- can, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spraying Devices, of which the following is a speci fication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved spraying device especially adapted for use in connection with the nozzle of a hose, one object of the invention being to provide an improved form of spraying device embodyingaconvex surface and a depression therein to secure the maximum spraying effect, another object of the invention being to provide improved means to connect the spraying device to a hose nozzle so that the spraying device may be moved into position for use in connection with the nozzle, or to one side of the latter when it is not desired to employ the spraying device.
The invention consists in the construct-ion, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan of a spraying device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same applied to a nozzle: Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central vertical sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line ca of Fig. 1.
For the purposes of this specification a hose nozzle is indicated at 1. In accordance with my invent-ion I provide a spraying device 2 which is formed with a convex spraying surface 3 in which, near its center, is a circular concave depression 4. The spraying device is here shown as struck up from sheet metal. It may be made of any suitable material and in any suitable way and is provided at its inner end with an arm 5 which is formed with a pair of cars 6, which are bent parallel with each other and at right angles tothe arm. The arm is also bent longitudinally as at 7 so that the body of the spraying device is at an angle to the main portion of the arm. I also provide a U-shaped clip 8 which passes around one side of the nozzle, near the discharge end thereof, the arms or end portions 9 of the clip bearing against the outer sides of the ears 6. A bolt 10 passes through alined openings in the ears of the spraying device Specification of Letters Patent.

arm and the arms of theclip and serves to pivotally connect the spraying device to the clip and hence also to the nozzle. This pivotal connection between the spraying device and the nozzle enables the spraying device to be disposed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in front of the nozzle and in an angle extending across the axis of the nozzle so that the stream from the nozzle is caused to strike in the depression 1 of the spraying device. The pivotal connection bet-ween the spraying device and the nozzle also enables the spraying device to be turned to one side and out of the way of the stream from the nozzle as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when it is desired to employ the nozzle without the spraying device. Hence this pivotal connection enables the spraying device to be used in connection with the'nozzle and also enables the nozzle to be used independently of the spraying device, and it is unnecessary to detach the spraying device entirely from the nozzle when it is not desired to use the spraying device.
When the spraying device has been turned to the desired position the nut 11 on the bolt 10 is then tightened so as to cause the arms of the clip to bear frictionally against the ears of the spraying device and to also press the said ears directly against the nozzle, as indicated in Fig. 3, and hence the spraying device, by simply tightening the nut 11, may be firmly clamped to the nozzle in any desired adjusted position.
In the operation of my improved spraying device the jet or stream of water from the nozzle strikes the depression 4 and is broken up thereby into a fine spray which passes over the convex or spraying surface of the spraying device and leaves the same at varying angles and degrees of force and speed and also at different points around the said convex surface of the spraying device, thus causing the water to be evenly distributed and to be also widely distributed by the spraying device.
While I have herein shown the spraying surface of the spraying device as convex in form and the depression therein as circular in form I would have it understood that modifications may be made in these particulars within the scope of my invention as defined by the appended claims.
Modifications may be also made in the form, construction and proportions of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. In combination with a nozzle, a spray ing device connected thereto and having a substantially elliptical convex deflecting surface, the base of which is at an angle to and intersects the prolongation of the axis of the bore of the nozzle, and a concave depression disposed substantially at the center of the said deflecting surface and intersected by Ehe prolongation of the axis of the nozzle ore.
2. In combination with a nozzle, a substantially U shaped clip disposed transversely thereon, a spraying device having a supporting arm provided at its inner end with ears bent therefrom and bearing against the inner sides of the arms of the clip, and a pivot bolt extending through the ears of the spraying device and the arms of the clip and coacting therewith to clamp the ears of the spraying device against the nozzle and against the arms of the clip, whereby to secure the spraying device in any desired position.
