APPLIGATION FILED JUNE 24, 1910.

narra saras- DOOR.
'To au 'whom-25 may concern:
Be it known that I', HERMANN F. CUN'rz.
a citizen of the United States, resident of Hartford, county of Hartford, State ot Con necticut, have invented new and' useful lmprovementsin Doors, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in doors, ,particularly to doors for street cars. The object-of the invention is to provide a door, which, when open,'will be so disposed that it will occupy a very small space in the car where it will not be in the way..
Other objects are to provide a door of this kind which may have the desired -amount of glass panel, and to provide a door which may be easily operated.
In order to accomplish these objects, I have provided a door comprising a sliding parawhich may carryv a glass panel, anda vrolling part, the sliding part occupying very little space because of its width, the rolling part being adapted'to wind around a wind- Aing roller in such a wayl that it will occupya very small space, in^a part of .the car where this small space can be very easily spared. f y
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, partly in horizontal section, showing a portion ot a. street ear pro-vided with doors arranged, in accordance with my invention, for the side and end doors ot a pay-as-you-en'ter car'. l Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a side door of a single vestibule car. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of a detail, drawn on a large scale, and Fig. i is a similar view of a modification.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts'throughout the several" figures.
Referring more particularly to the draw' ing, Fig. 1 shows an end door 5, a sideexit door 6, and a side entrance door 7 of a payas-you-enter car. The side doors. 6 and 7` are adapted to slide in the guide-way 8 in I the floor of the vestibule, while the end door slides 4in a similar guidefway 9.
Each of the doors 5, 6 and 7 consists of a sliding panel-section 10 and a rollingr section 11, the rolling-section consisting of a plurality of vertical strips 12 connected bystraps '13. and. adapted to be wound around a vertical rotatable winding roller 14, provided at the ends with pintles mounted in suitable bear- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed June 24,1910. Serial No. 568,631.v

'venient heights, as, foi" instance, near Athe endsof the doors and intermediately of the ends. The panel-sections 'may easily be provided with one or more glass panels 18, in which case the-straps 13 may be secured between adjacent ends of the panels. lEach of the rollers is disposed, as shown, in a part of the car wheresaid roller and the rolling-section wound therearound will be at least iii theway, 'and so that .when the door is open, the panel-section, the roller and the rollingv section will be inclosed in a housing formed by a portion ot the walls of the car and a suitable casing 19 ot metal, or other desired material. 1n' the 'arrangement illustrated, in order to economize space, the roller is placed to one side ot the path of the panel-section; and the panel` section slides partly past the roller. This makes it necessary that the rolling-section travel in a sharply curved path. 1n order to accomplish this without excessive triction, and to prevent the contact of the rolling-section with its housing, I have provided. for each door. an idler or roller 20. adapted to engage the rolling-section and holdvit in proper position vwhen the door is being closed or opened. It is not necessary forthese idlersto have the exact position shown; for instance, the idler 20 ot the door 5 could be placed nearer to the roller 14 or nearer to the door, if it were necessary or desirable. In order to4 balance the doors and to cause the rolling-section to wind around the winding-roller when the door is being opened, I may provide any suitable means, as for instance, a spiral spring hav` ing its outer end secured to the housing` and its inner end secured to either end of the roller 14, and tending to wind the rollersection onto the winding-section, as de` scribed in my Patent Number 889,910, issued Juno 9, 1909.
It desired, I may provide a suitable means for each door to be operated by a lever opoverhead; and the handlever may be placed near the separating rail 21, so that it may be operated from either side of the rail.
For closing the door suitable lever and linkage is applied near the top, while the top runs in a suitable groove. Inv this manner the spring also aids in quick opening which is a main desideratum.
In the single vestibule car illustrated in Fig. 2, the side door 23 is similar in construction to the doors in Fig. 1, and does not need further detailed description. It has its winding roller 14 disposed inthe forward partvr of the side of the vestibule similar to the entrance door 7. All of the doors may b e operated by hand in the usual `manner, as well as by the rack and lever mechanism hereinbefore described.
The modification of Fig. 4 shows a wide vertical strip 22 where the rolling-section joins the panel-section, which is applicable in certain cases where the housing space is particularly adapted, and the wide section desired for eXtra stiffness or additional glass llight.
Vhile I have shown particular forms of embodiment of my invention, it is not confined to such particular forms shown and scribed, but
vWhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
'1. A door comprising a sliding-'section and a rolling-section, straps between the sections connecting the edge of the rolling-section to the sliding-section intermediate its ends, whereby a portion of the latter passes the rolling-section when the door is rolled in.
2. In a door, the combination of a slidingsection, a winding-roller and a rolling-section secured to'the sliding-section a distance from its edge andto the roller, and adapted to be wound around the winding-roller and permit the edge of the sliding-section to pass tangentially by the winding-roller.
3. In a car door, the combination of a sliding-section, a rotatable winding-roller, straps secured to the winding-roller and an intermediate part of the sliding-section whereby the edge of the latter separates from the adjacent rolling-section, a rollingsection secured to said straps and adapted to be wound around said winding-roller, and
an idler adapted-to engage said rolling-section.
4.. In a door for cars, the combination of a sllding-section having a glass panel therein, a vertical rotatable roller placed outside of the path of the panel section, stra-ps com- Winding roller in said casing. a door havingv a rolling-section. and a panel, a guide and pocket for said panel section extending inwardly beyond the casing and a connection from the rolling-section to the panel section between its front and rear edges whereby the panel section may pass into said pocket section leaving its outer' edge substantially flush with the door post.
6. In combination in a doorway, a door post, a door comprising a rolling-section and a light panel having a connection from the edge of the rolling-section to oneside of the panel section, a casing for the rolling-` section, a pocket for the panel section, said casing and pocket being arranged whereby the rolling-section is rolled up adjacent to the panel section, and the panel section is admitted to the pocket a' distance sufficient to permit its outer edge to be flush with the door post.
7. In combination in a doorway, a door comprising a rolling-section and a slidingsection, a connection from the rolling-sec-v tion to the sliding-section intermediate the ends ofthe sliding-section, a door post. a compartment to receive the rolling-section at one side of the plane of travel of the door. said compartment formed of sheathing closely conforming to the rolling-section when rolled up, and a pocket for the panelnsection adjacentnto and extending tangentially bevond said compartment.
Signed at New York, this 22nd day of June 1910.
