Application filed July 31, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LINDER, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Meadowlands, in the county of St. Louls, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn- Huskers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to corn husking machines, and has for an object to provide a device of this character that will have novel means for twisting the ear from the fibrous stem containing the husk.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for holding the fibrous stem stationary during the twisting of the ear therefrom.
A still further object is to provide a device of this kind having a novel cam ring that will actuate the ear clutching fingers of the device so as to positively prevent their accidental displacement.
A still further object is to provide a device including a sliding ear supporting head, and stationary resilient fingers equipped with curved tips forming a stripping ring which pushes back the husk from the tip of the ear upon the head being manually slid toward the ring.
With the above objects in view the inven tion consists in certain novel details of con struction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims.

The device is designed to be supported on a portable truck designated in general by the numeral 10. Rising from the floor of the truck adjacent to one edge are spaced standards 11 which are connected at their upper ends by a rod 12, this rod forming a pivotal support for an ear receiving trough 13, lugs 14 being formed on the rear end of the trough to receive the rod. For yieldingly supporting the inner end of the trough, a pair of standards 15 are arranged on opposite sides of the trough and are terminally equipped with helical springs 16, lugs 17 and 18 projecting from the edge of the trough and standard respectively and engaging in the bores of the springs to secure the springs in position.
The longitudinal edges of the trough are bent outwardly and form guides 19, and arranged to slide on the trough is a plate 20, having transverse strips 20 formed with downwardly bent extremities 21 which embrace the guides of the trough. A circular head 22 is fixed to the inner edge of the plate and conforms to the contour of the trough, this plate being equipped on its operating face with a radial series of toothed angle irons 23 and further being formed with a segmental notch 24:- which extends about to the center of the head. The fibrous stem on the ear of corn is impinged against the toothed angle irons so that the latter penetrate into the stem and prevent rotation of the ear of corn in the trough. The purpose of the notch 24: is to permit of the operators hand being thrust forwardly through the head in mounting the ear of corn as described. The head is manually moved forwardly along the trough to advance the ear of corn to the husking mechanism, a handle 25 being fitted to the plate 20 to facilitate this movement.
Mounted to turn in spaced pedestals 26 is a stub shaft 27, one end of which is equipped with a driving gear 28 and the opposite end of which is equipped with a circular head 29; Extending forwardly from the head are husk spreading resilient fingers 30, the tip ends of the fingers being bent toward each other as shown at 31, and then terminally and oppositely bowed as shown at 32, these bowed portions cooperating in forming a ring which engages the tip of the ear of corn between the kernels and the husk, and as the ear of corn is moved longitudinally of the trough, strip or spread the husk from the ear as shown in Fig. 4, the fingers rotating constantly during this movement of the parts and yielding slightly to conform to the contour of the ear. In so much as the bowed terminals of the fingers do not form a continuous ring, by rotating the fingers the in ner surface of the husk is acted upon as if a continuous ring was presented while at the same time, the sharpened tips of the fingers maintain their function of tearing loose from the ear any portion of the husk which may have a tendency to stick to the ear.
Extending forwardly from the head 29 and approximately in parallelism with the husk spreading fingers are fingers 33, the tip ends of these fingers being equipped with transversely disposed arcuate saws 34 which are disposed in rear of the ear stripping ring, and are designed to penetrate the ear at a predeterminedstage in the husking operation. The base ends of the fingers 33 are bent outwardly from the head 29 as shown at 35, and thence bent inwardly to intersect the husk stripping fingers 30 as shown at 36. The inclined portions 35 of the fingers are equipped with idlers 37 which bear upon the inner periphery of a substantially frusto-conical cam ring 38, this cam ring being moved forwardly simultaneously with the advance of and toward the advancing ear of corn and serving to move the fingers 33 toward each other so that the saws at the tips of the fingers penetrate into the ear of corn and positively grip the ear. The shaft 27 is rotated constantly causing the rotation of the ear and serving to twist the ear from the fibrous stem and clinging husk. The cam ring is now moved rearwardly and the gripping fingers spring out from the car so that both the ear and husk may be independently removed from the device.
To mount the cam ring for sliding movement, a pair of parallel guide rods 39 are arranged in horizontal position on opposite sides of the ring, the ends of these shafts be ing supported by suitable standards 40. Orificed lugs 41 project from opposite sides of the cam ring and engage these rods. Pivotally secured at their upper ends to one of the lugs and to one of the guide hooks of the plate 20, are links 42 and 43, respectively, the inner ends of these links being connected by a rock link 44 which is pivoted approximately centrally to one of the standards 40. By virtue of this train of links, as the ear holding. head is being advanced longitudinally in the trough, the cam ring will be simultaneously advanced along the guide rods in the direction of the trough and serve to move the saws of the gripping fingers into engagement with an ear as above described, it being understood that the husk is stripped from the ear by the stripping ring prior to the engagement of these saws with the ear.
For rotating the driving shaft 27 in order to twist the ear from its fibrous stem as above described, a gear 45 is mounted to turn on a stub shaft 46 carried by a pedestal 47 secured to the floor, this gear meshing with the driving gear 28. A treadle 48 is centrally pivoted to a suitable hanger 49 secured to the floor, and is equipped with an upstanding link 50, the upper end of which is swivelly mounted on a wrist pin 51 projecting the gear 45. Upon depression of the treadle, the gear 45 will be rotated constantly, and through the instrumentality of the gear 28 will cause the rotation of the shaft 27.
In order to adjust the relative positions of the stripping and gripping fingers, the base ends of both sets of fingers are formed integral with plates 53, each plate being provided with a longitudinal slot 54 through which retaining screws 55 carried by the head 29 projects, an adjusting screw 57 carried by the plate also projecting through this slot and permitting of the plate being adjusted radially on the head. This adjustment permits of the stripping and gripping fingers being moved toward or away from each other as desired.
What is claimed, is
1. In a corn husking device, the combina tion of an ear support, a sliding head on said support, means on said head for engaging the fibrous stem of an ear and holding the same against rotation, a rotary head confronting said sliding head, resilient ear gripping fingers projecting from said rotary head, a cam ring sliding longitudinally upon said fingers and camming the same into engagement with said ear, and means for stripping the husk from the tip of the ear prior to the actuation of said gripping finers. b 2. In a corn husking device, the combination of an ear support, a sliding head on said support, means on said head for engaging the fibrous stem of an ear and holding the same against rotation, a rotary head confronting said sliding head, resilient cam actuated ear gripping fingers projecting from said rotary head and serving to twist the ear from its stem, and resilient fingers projecting from said rotary head having oppositely bowed terminals forming an expansible ring which engages between the husk and ear and strips the husk from the ear tip prior to the actuation of said ear gripping fingers.
3. In a corn husking device, the combination of a support, an ear holding trough pivoted at one end to said support and having its free end yieldingly mounted on said toward each other, and means projecting from said rotary head for stripping the husk from the tip of the ear prior to the actuation of said head rotating means.
