RAZOR-SHARPENING- MACHINE.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL AMADEo, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Shenandoah, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor- Sharpening Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in razor sharpening machines, the object of the invention being to provide a machine which is constructed and adapted to evenly hone and grind a razor, and which is always under the control of the operator to regulate the pressure of the blade on the hone or the grinding wheel.
A further object is to provide an improved mounting for a hone which allows the hone to follow the movement of the razor, and insures a uniform engagement of hone and blade.
A further object is to provide an improved razor holding device upon which spring-pressureis had, and which is moved by a crank disk in much the same manner as a razor is moved when hand honed.
A further object is to provide an improved razor grinding mechanism with improved means for feeding the blade longitudinally, and in contact with the grinding wheel so that the blade may be uniformly ground to remove nicks and the like.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 3, is a view in transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a view in section on the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is a view in section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6, is a view in longitudinal section through the razor blade holder, and Fig. 7, is an en larged view in cross section through the razor blade holder.

the uprights 2, and by another bar 5 with the other upright 2. The uprights 2 are connected near their lower ends by a cross bar 6 having bearings 7 for'the trunnions 8 of the foot treadle 9. This treadle 9 is connected by a link 10 with a crank shaft 11 mounted in upright 2, and hanger 3, and provided with a fly wheel 12 at a relatively large pulley 13. This pulley 13 is connected by a belt 14 with a pulley 15 on a countershaft 16. This shaft 16 is located above shaft 11, and is supported in suitable hearings in upright 2, and hanger 3.
A beveled gear 17 on shaft 16 transmits motion to a beveled gear 18 on a vertical shaft 20 which latter projects upwardly through the table 1, and is secured eccentrically in a disk 21 by means of a removable pin 22. A pivot bolt 23 in disk 21 connects the same with a block 24, and a nut 25 on the end of this bolt pivotally secures the parts together.
Block 24 is provided with alug 26 which is secured in the bifurcated end of a block 27 by means of a pin 28. Block 27 projects into the end of a tubular razor holder 29, and is made with an annular groove 30 to receive lugs 31 on the tubular razor blade holder, so as to allow said holder a rotary motion on the block, while the pin 28 permits the holder to have a vertical pivotal movement.
A razor 32 is adapted to be secured in the end of the tubular razor blade holder 29 by means of a thumb screw 33 so as to hold the blade of the razor in position on a hone 34. This hone 34 is mounted in a box 35, and the latter has a central recess 36 to receive a circular head 37 on a bolt 38 secured in table 1. This bolt head 37 constitutes a support for the box, and the hone carried thereby, and allows the box movement up and down at both ends, thus offering a movable contact for the razor blade, and not a rigid contact which might injure the blade. In any event, it is believed a support of this kind for the hone enables the hone to follow the movements of the razor, so that an action is had similar to hand honing.
A coiled spring 39 is connected at its upper end to a ring 40 on the tubular razor holder 29, extends through an opening 41 in table 1, and is connected at its lower end to n arm 42.- A m 4 s c nn ted. by a hinge 43 with a. block t4 on bar lr, and a cam lever 45 fulcrtuned to hanger 3 engages this arm at), and may be manually manipulated so as to regulate the spring pressure upon the blade in contact with the hone.
To hold the razor blade holder at the proper angle, and permit it to move longitudinally as it bones the razor, a block 46 is pivotally supported between its ends on a screw 47, and is providd at one end. with a roller L8 to engage the tubular holder 29.
An arm 49 is pivotally secured at one end by a screw 50 with the table 1, and provided between its ends with a notch 61 to receive the. bloc 1-6 and hold it against accidental movement, and is provided at its free end with a hand hold 52 to facilitate the movement of the arm.
On the table 1, bearings are provided for a shaft 54, on which a grinding wheel is secured. A. pulley 56 on this shaft is connected by a belt 57 with a pulley 58 on shaft 16. Adjacent this grinding wheel a block 59 is connected to table 1 by means of hinges (30, and is provided with a dovetailed flange 61 fitting a similar shaped groove in a razor clamp This razor clamp comprises two members as clearly shown in Figs. 4; and 5, and they are drawn together by means of bolts 63 and thumb nuts (34 to securely clamp a razor. A screw 65 is held against longitudinal moven'ient in a block 66 connected by hinges ($7 to table 1 and engages a scrow-threadcd hole (38 in the clamp 62, so that when this screw is turned, the clamp will be moved longitudinally to feed the razor to the grinding wheel On one end. of this screw (35, a pulley (39 is secured, and is connected by a belt 70 with a pulley 71 on shaft 16. To exert the proper pressure of the blade against the grinding wheel, a coiled spring 72 is connected at one end to the blocl: 59, and at its other end to a lever 73. This lever 73 is pivoted on a bolt 74 in hanger 8, and is adapted to be moved to control the tension of the spring. A pivoted arm 75 is provided to hold this lever '73 against upward movement, but this arm may be moved and the lever moved to secure any pressure de sired.
On the table 1, a soap cup 76 is preferably provided, and a cover 77 is hinged on the table, is adapted to cover the several mechanisms on the table, and is preferably provided with a tape rack 78 for razors to be sharpened.
Below the table, a drawer 79 is provided for suitable tools, and other articles liable to be needed in the manipulation of the machine.
With the parts as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the operation of treadle 9 transmits motion to shaft 11, and through the medium of pulleys 13 and 15, a belt 14 revolves shaft 16.
Beveled gears 17 and 18, and shaft 20 cause the disk 21 to impart an oscillating and an angular motion to the razor holder As the spring 39 is positioned at an angle as seen most clearly in Fig. 4t, the razor blade holder is held against roller 48, and then an angular or circular motion of the pivoted end of the holder causes the blade to move not only longitudinally but also at an angle, giving the same approximately the motion it receives in hand honing.
When one side of the blade is honed, the holder 29 is turned so as to present the other side of the blade to the hone, and this reversing is done until the blade is properly honed.
Before the honing operation, if the blade contains nicks, it is secured in the clamp 64 and when the belt 70 is in position, this clamp will be fed longitudinally as the grinding wheel 55 is turned through the medium of the mechanism above explained.
When the belt is twisted, as shown, the clamp feeds in one direction, and when the belt is untwisted, it feeds in the opposite direction, so that the blade may be automatically fed back longitudinally and ground uniformly.
To prevent the hone from an undue circular mot-ion due to its central support, a flange 80 is provided on the table 1, and while it permits the hone, a certain amount of moven'ient prevents it from getting out of position for the blade.
Various slight changes n'iight be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do notlimit myself to the precise details set forth. but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the'appended claims.
Having thus described, my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a. table, of a projection on the table, a hone holder, having a central recess therein to receive said projection and support the holder slightly above the table, a bone in said holder, and means for moving a razor blade over said hone, substantially as described.
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a table, of a projection on the table, a hone holder, having a central recess therein to receive said projection and support the holder slightly above the table, a hone in said holder, a shaft projecting through the table, a razor blade holder above the table and having a crank connection with said shaft, and means in said holder for securing a razor in position with its blade on said hone, substantially as described.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a table, of a projection on the table, a hone holder, having a central recess therein to receive said projection and support the holder slightly above the table, a hone in said holder, a shaft projecting through the table, a razor blade holder above the table and having a crank connection with said shaft, means in said holder for securing a razor in position with its blade on said hone, said holder mounted to turn, and means exerting downward spring pressure on said holder, subtantially as described.
4. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a table, of a projection on the table, a hone holder having a central recess therein to receive said projection and support the holder slightly above the table, a hone in said holder, a shaft projecting through the table, a razor blade holder above the table and having a crank connection with said shaft, means in said holder for securing a razor in position with its blade on saif hone, a ring on said holder, a hinged arm, a spring connecting said ring and arm, and a cam lever engaging said arm regulating the tension of said spring on the holder, substantially as described.
5. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a table, of a projection on the table, a hone holder having a central recess therein to receive said projection and support the holder slightly above the table, a hone in said holder, a shaft projecting through the table, a razor blade holder above the table and having a crank connection with said shaft, means in said holder for securing a razor in posi tion with its blade on said hone, a ring on said holder, a hinged arm, a spring connecting said ring and arm, a cam lever engaging said arm regulating the tension of said spring on the holder, said spring located at an angle and tending to move the holder in one direction, a pivoted block, a roller on said block against said holder, and a catch holding said block with its roller against the holder, substantially as described.
6. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a table, and a hone on said table, of a shaft projecting through the table, a razor blade holder above the table and having a crank connec tion with said shaft, means in said holder for securing a razor in position with its blade on said hone, said holder mounted t turn, and means exerting downward spring pressure on said holder, substantially as described.
7. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a table, and a hone on said table, of a shaft projecting through the table, a razor blade holder above the table and having a crank connection with said shaft, means in said holder for securing a razor in position with its blade on said hone, a ring on said holder, a hinged arm, a spring connecting said ring and arm, and a cam lever engaging said arm regulating the tension of said spring on the holder, substantially as described.
8. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a table, and a hone on said table, of a shaft projectin, through the table, a razor blade holder above the table and having a crank connection with said shaft, means in said holder for securing a razor in position with its blade on said hone, a ring on said holder, a hinged arm, a spring connecting said ring and arm, a cam lever engaging said. arm regulating the tension of said spring on the holder, said spring located at an angle and tending to move the holder in one direction, a pivoted block, a roller on said block against said holder, and a catch holding said block with its roller against the holder, substantially as described.
