To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT B. Gooi-IRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, in the county of Warren and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Knife-` Grinders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates. to machines for grinding knives and is intended more particularly for service in grinding the knivesy The invention consists in certain novel form of the invention as adapted for operat-4 ing upon the knife of a papeicuttingy machine.
Figure 1 is aplan view of the machine in place on the table of a paper cutter. Fig. 2 is a corresponding front view, a portion of the table being shown in vertical section.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the' table showing the groove and the engaging means therein. F ig.` 4 is an end view of the machine with the grinding disk inclined as in service, and showing a portion of the table in transverse section. The remaining figures are on a larger scale. The paper-cutting machine may be understood to be of yany ordinary or approved type having the usual table M, a vertically reciprocated knife M1 and groove m in which the edge of the knife is received at the termination of the cuttingstroke. The op-` erating and other parts, not shown, may be as usual.
The improved grinding machine has a bar A adapted to lie in the groove m and engage strongly therein by the wedging action of a block B grooved to match to a tapered or inclined feather or rib A1 on the bar. The latter carries a frame C having at each end a vertical flange or way C1 curved con- `cavely on its upper face to receive corresponding convex flanges D1 D1 yon a carrier D and permit the carrier to rotate within prescribed limits upon the curved ways C1 C1 in determining its angular position and phefparts carried thereon relatively to theni e.
Upward extensions VD2 from the carrier support a longitudinally extending bar D3 having on itsedges straight parallel ways D4 D4 and a rack D5 between such ways; the latter support and guide a traveling carriage F in which is loosely journaled a shaft G' carrying a pinion G1 in mesh with the rack D5 and on its inner overhung end an emery wheel N or other grinding disk. The carriage is reciprocated by the hand of the `operator upon a handle G2 on the upper face of the carriage, and as the pinion is in mesh with the relatively stationary rack D5 the. reciprocating motion rotates the grinding disk N alternately in opposite directions during the travel. By moving the carrier inthe curved ways C1 C1 the angle of the face vof the grinding disk against the knife may be varied to conform to the' bevel forming thecutting edge ofthe latter, and lwhen thus adjusted is held by clamps E E, one at each end, overlapped upon the curved upper yfaces .ofthe flanges Dl D1 and compressed thereon by bolts E1 El, thus inducing sufficient friction to hold the carrier re` liably. The curves of the ways C1 C1 are identical and each is an arc of a circle they lcenter of which is shown as lying in the 5,0 tached plane of the knife edge. Thisarrangement is preferable but may be varied.

Although the invention is described as applied in sharpening the knives of paper-cut 1 00 ting machines it will be understood that it` will serve in other grinding operations; to which it may be adapted. In a grinding machine, a frame, curved Ways thereon, a carrier mounted on said Ways and movable thereon to vary its vertical angular position relatively thereto, means for holding said carrier in such angular position, a carriage mounted on said carrier to reciprocate thereon, a shaft j ournaled in said carriage With freedom to move aXially, a grinding disk on said shaft, a rack on said carrier, a pinion on said shaft in mesh With said rack, means for holding such machine in operative relation to a knife to be ground, means for presenting said disk in yielding conta-ct With such knife, and adjustable means for varying the force of such yielding contact.
5. In a portable grinding machine adapted to operate upon the knife of a paper-cutting machine, a bar having aninclined face, a block having an oppositely inclined face, said bar and block adapted to be received in the groove of said paper-cutting machine, means for moving said bar and block relatively to each other to engage or disengage said groove, and grinding mechanism carried by said bar.

In a portable grinding machine, adapted to operate upon the knife of a paper-cutting machine, a bar having an inclined face, a block having an oppositely inclined face, said bar and block adapted to be received in the groove of said paper-cutting machine, means for moving said bar and block relatively to each other to engage or disengage said groove, a frame mounted on said bar, means for adjusting said frame horizontally relatively to said bar, a carrier on said `on said Ways, clamps for holding said carrier in the desired angular position, longitudinal Ways on said carrier, a carriage mounted on such carrier to be reciprocated along said longitudinal Ways, yielding abutments at the ends of said carrier to cushion the impact of said carriage, a shaft journaled in the latter, a rack on said carrier, a

In a grinding machine of the character set forth, a carrier having Ways parallel with the knife to be ground, a carriage mounted on said Ways and arranged to be reciprocated thereon, a shaft journaled in said carriage with freedom to move axially therein, a grinding disk on said shaft, a rack on said carrier, a pinion on said shaft in mesh With said rack, a lever pivotally mounted on said carriage, a spring actingy upon said lever to force the latter against the end of said shaft, and means acting in opposition to the force of said spring to relieve said shaft from such spring pressure.
9. In va grinding machine of the character set forth, a bar adapted to engage the groove of a paper cutting machine, a frame supported on said bar, and adjusting means for .varying the horizontal angle of said frame relatively to said bar, curved Ways on said frame, a carrier mounted on such Ways and movable thereon to vary its vertical angle relatively thereto, means for holding said carrier in the desired position, a reciprocating carriage on said carrier, a shaft journaled in said carriage and rotated by such reciprocations, and a grinding disk on said shaft.
