UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Join: ZBAEUMLE, or MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN 'NECKTIE HOLDER AND SHIELD.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, JOHN BAEUMLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Necktie Holders and Shields, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in neck tie holders or shields, by which the neck tie is adapted to be retained in place between the folded members of an ordinary turn down collar, and it pertains more especially among other things-4st, to the series of tie retaining fingers formed upon the respective sides of a thin flexible plate in such a manner that those connected with one edge of said plate are adapted to alternate with those connected with the opposite edge of said plate, while the ends of the fingers connected with one edge of the plate extend past and between the ends of the fingers connected with the opposite edge of said plate, whereby the two series taken together extend entirely across the outer surface of the tie, and thereby securely retain the tie in place; 2nd, to the open spaces between the fingers of the two opposing series, whereby the tie is readily inserted by simply passing the same alternately over the ends of and beneath the fingers of the respective edges, and whereby the necessity of using instruments for drawing or forcing the tie longitudinally beneath the fingers of the shield is avoided; and 3rd, to the recesses formed in the two opposing edges of the shield between the fingers, whereby the width of the plate is reduced and the shield is more flexible and conforms more readily to the shape of the collar.
My invention is further explained by reference to the, accompanying drawings, in
whichshield comprises the back plate 1.,

upper and lower edges with transversely arranged series of fingers 2 and 3. The fingers of the series 2 alternate with the fingers of the series 3 and said fingers are preferably located at substantially uniform distances. apart, while the fingers ofone edge are centrally located between the fingers of the opposing edge and the ends of the fingers of one series extend slightly past the ends of the opposin series, whereby the two serles of fingers ta ten together, extend entirely across the surface of the tie.
4 represents the tie, which when bein inserted beneath the fingers 2 and .3, is first drawn beneath one of the fingers of the upper series, thence over the end of one of the fingers of the lower series, thence beneath the lower end of one of the fi ers of the upper series, and thus the tie is alternately inclined upwardly as shown in Fig. 2, thence downwardly as indicated by dotted lines in said figure, as it is alternately passed over the ends of the fingers of the respective series, until it'has been thus brought beneath all the fingers of the shield, and when thus inserted, it is free to be drawn longitudinally backwardly and forwardly beneath the fingers,- It'will'be, understood that the upper or folded ends of the fingers are bent so as to leave ample space between them and the plate 1 for the reception of the tie, whereby the tie is free to be drawn, as stated, backwardly and forwardly beneath them. The fingers 2 and 3 are also formed of thin flexible material, preferably metal, which yields sufiiciently to permitthe tie to be drawn backwardly and forwardly between them and the opposing surface of the shield.
The plate 1 is'provided on its upper edge with a series of recesses 5, and on its lower edge with a series of recesses 6, whereby the width of said late is reduced and the same isv thereby renc ered more flexible in proportion to its width. The center of the shield is provided with a circular recess 7, which is adapted to engage upon the collar button 8, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the shield and tie are at all times retained beneath the folded members of the collar, and it becomes impossible for the same to work down in sight, as it might otherwise do if not thus supported by the collar button.
It will be understood that by extendin the fingers of one series past the ends 0 the fingers of the opposite series, the fingers of both series taken together, extend entirely across the opposing surface of the tie,
whereby the liability of the center of the tie buckling or becoming wrinkled and extending outwardly between the ends of the opposing series, is prevented, and the tie is securely retained in place.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
\ 1. In a device of the described class, a flexible shield adapted to be used with a collar and neck tie comprising a longitudinal central member provided upon its respective edges with a longitudinal series of recesses and a series of transversely arranged fingers, the fingers of one series alternating with and extending past the ends of the fingers of the opposite series, said fingers being respectively bent over the longitudinal central member at a slight distance there-' from, whereby a space is provided between said fingers and the central member for the reception of the tie, and whereby the fingers of the respective series taken together, extend-entirely across the tie.
2. In a device of the described class, a flexible shield adapted to be used with a collar and neck tie comprising a longitudinal central 'Inember provided upon its lower edge with a recess for the reception of a collar button, and upon its respective edges with a longitudinal series of. transversely arranged fingers, the fingers of one series alternating with the fingers of the other series, said fingers being. respectively bent over the longitudinal central member at a slight distance therefrom, whereby a space is provided between said fingers and the central member for the reception of the tie.- In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
