FUSE.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
. Patented Apr. '2, 1912.
Application filed December 15, 1909. Serial No; 533,279.
To all whom it may concern: 'Bevit known that we, FREDERICK P. Poona .and PAUL A. BRENDEL, both citizens of the United'States of America, and residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairficld and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and Improved Fuse, of which the following is a specification. Our invention relates to fuseplugs and the object of our invention is to provide an improved type of plug of small size adapted f to carry a heavy current without danger of explosion on the blowing ofthe fuse.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a fuse plug with cap removed, embodying our improvement; 2 is a vertical sectionthrough the same with cap on; and Fig. 3 is a plan of a plug with cap removed and showing a barrier of modified form.
Describing our invention with. relation to the embodiment thereof illustrated our imroved fuse comprises a hollow insulating dy A with screw shell and center con tacts B and C respectively, of common type,
and a cap D. Instead of employing a fuse strip extending from the center contact to the shell and united to the latter in a single well, We pro ose to form a plurality of wells a in the be y A and carry 'a series of fuse strips from the center contact into these wells. In the examples illustrated two wells are shown diametrically opposite each other, and the series of fuses F is formed from a continuous flat metallic strip bent down. at the middle and soldered to thecen ter contact and provided with calibration holes f one on either side of the center contact. Obviously the current capacity of the 40 plug is the sum of the capacities of'the fuse strips since the current passes from the shellto the center contact through. all the strips of the series simultaneously. Upon the blowing of the fuse-it is found that an explosion of .much less violence results when a series of such fuse strips is employed than when a single strip of greater current capacity is inserted between the shell and the center contact, and that a porcelain body of given strength remains uninjured in the'one case whereas it is frequently shattere'd. in the other. The explanation of this is thought to be found in the succession of small explosions occurring when a series of strips is employed, since the capacity of thestrips varies slightly, either accidentally, or
intentionally. The improved result when a series of strips isemployed is furthered if a barrier G'bez inserted between the strips so that each explosion is confined to a separate chamber; This barrier may be formed in any desired manner. A simple method is shown namely by forming grooves in the body A in which the edges of the arrier G may engage. The precise form and nature of the barrier is immaterial, it being shown as a thick wall in Fig. 1 and as a relati ely thin partition in Fig. 3.
Obviously the number and form of the fuse strips andthe manner of their fastening and form of the barrier may be varied in many ways without departing from the scope of our invention, and we do not limit ourselves to the precise structureshown.
WVe claim as our invention;
1. A. fuse having shell and center contacts, incombination with an inclosed fuse strip having its opposite ends electrically connected with the shelland being electri- 80 8. A plug fuse having shell andcenter contact, a central well and a plurality of lateral wells, and 'a plurality of. inclosed fuse members extendmg between and permanently connected to said shell-and cenname to this specification, in the presence ter contacts through said central and latof two subscribing witnesses.
eral wells, in combination with barrier FREDERICK P. POOLE. means arranged in said central well and 5- serving to confine the rupture points of said PAUL BRENDEL' fuse members in separate chambers, for the Witnesses: purpose described. H. U. BADEAU,
In testimony whereof we have signed our H. W. Gonnsnononen.
