RATCHET-WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM G. Rusoon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and fitate of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Ratchet-.Vrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a new and improved form of ratchet wrench, and an objeet of my invention is to provide a wrench having a wheel, the circumference of which is recessed to afford a nut-engaging space for nuts of different sizes.
A further object of my invention is to 7 provide a wrench adapted to engage a nut disposed in position ditlicult of access by an ordinary wrench.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a wrench adapted to fit nuts of different sizes, and having means to lock the nut-engaging element in position.
I attain the above outlined objects by pivoting a wheel to a handle, which wheel has different sized nut-engaging apertures in the periphery thereof, and by rigidly mounting on the side of said wheel, a ratchet, which ratchet is adapted to be engaged by one or both of a pair of fingers, to lock the wheel in position, or to permit its movement in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction, depending upon which way it is desired to rotate the nut engaged by the apertures.
With the above and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustratedl in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention, parts being broken away to show the internal mechanism of one of the fingers and part of the handle being broken away; Fig. 2 is an edge View of the device shown in Fig. 1; and Fig.

In the drawings I have shown a handle 4 of any preferred length, the end of which handle is formed into a broadened portion 5, which broadened portion is slotted transversely, as shown at (3. In this slotted portion is mounted a wheel 7 carried by a pin 8, which pin has one end journaled in an extension 9 from the broadened portion 5, the other end of which pin is journaled in a bracket 10 extending from one face of the broadened portion 5. Rigidly mounted on the side of the wheel 7 and fastened thereto by means of pins 11, is a ratchet 12, which ratchet is also mounted on the pin 8. The circumference of the wheel 7 is recessed to form a series of different sized nut-engaging recesses 13. It will be seen that by this arrangement, the wheel 7 is rotated until the recess best adapted to fit the particular nut is brought into position, and, if desired to lock the recess in this position, the ends 1 1 of bolts 15 are brought into engagement with the teeth 16 of the ratchet 12, which ends engaging the ratchet at two points, as shown in solid and dotted lines in Fig. 1, prevent the wheel 7 from moving in either direction, thereby holding the recess in its desired position.
The bolts 15 move in pockets 17 disposed longitudinally in the enlarged portion 5 and extending in a direction parallel with and on opposite sides of the bracket 10. Disposed in rear of each of the bolts 15 and having one end pressing against said bolt and the other end pressing against the bottom of the pocket 17, is a compression spring 18 tending to force the head 14 into engagement with the ratchet 12.
In order to hold the bolt 15 out of engagement with the ratchet, there is extending from and at right angles to the bolt, a catch 19, by means of which the bolt 15 is rotated on its longitudinal axis, to permit the catch 19 to ride into a pocket 20, in which position the bolt 15 is in engagement with the ratchet 12, or the catch may be withdrawn from the recess 20 and disposed in a channel 21, which channel is disposed at right angles to the pocket 17. In this position of the catch, the bolt is withdrawn from its engagement with the ratchet 12, as shown in the upper side of Fig. 1. With but one bolt.
in engagement with the ratchet 12, the wheel lie 7 may be rotated to turn the nut, as shown in Fig. 1, said rotation being in a clockwise direction. This movement is of advantage where it is difficult to engage a nut to rotate the same. As shown in Fig. 3, it is possible to tighten the nut by tension, though it is only possible to swing the handle 4- from its position shown in full lines to its position shown in dotted lines in said figure.
-Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a ratchet wrench having a handle, one end of which is formed into a relatively broad portion slotted transversely, a bracket extending from said handle attached to and parallel with said broadened portion, a
,wheel rotating in said slot and journaled between said broadened portion and said bracket, a ratchet rigidly afiixed to said wheel, a pair of bolts disposed on opposite sides of the bracket, substantially T-shaped in cross-section and housed in said broadened portion, means maintaining one member of each of said bolts in engagement with said ratchet, to prevent the same from rotating in one direction, said broadened portion having a channel therein, and means whereby said bolts may be rotated on the axis of the member engaging the ratchet, and seat in one channel to hold said member disengaged from said ratchet, said wheel having a series of differently sized nut-engaging recesses spaced about the periphery thereof.
