UNITEI) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. KELLOM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPUUT FOR CANS.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES F KELLOM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Spont for Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in providing a can with a spout which may he tightly fitted to the nozzle of the same so as to provide convenient means of pouring out the contents of the can, said spout being rotatable to the right or left so as to direct its nose in different positions, and being also adapted to be folded on the top of the can and pointed in various directions, so that said nose will not interfere with or be interfered by the handle of the can.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figure l represents a perspective view of a can having thereon a spout embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top or plan view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of a portion thereof in tilted position. Fig. l represents a cent al longitudinal section of the portion shown in Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings. A designates a can, and B the nozzle thereof these features of themselves being well known.
C designates a lipped spout which is provided with a neck I), the latter being adapted to enter the nozzle B so that the contents of the can may be poured out therefrom, and may be directed elsewhere by means of said spout.
The neck has a circumferential knurl or bead E between which and the lower portion of the body of the spout is the ring F which freely occupies the inturned channel formed by the bead and body, and is retained by the same, the spout being adapted to rotate on said ring as its bearing and holding device. The bead or knurl E and the lower portion of the body of the spout being of greater diameter than the walls of said channel, serve to retain the ring in position while readily permitting the spout to rotate in said ring. The ring is divided at Specification of Letters Patent.

what may be termed its rear or inner portion where it is continued in the form of arms (lr whose ends are ontturned forming limbs ll which are pivotally mounted on the ears J, and sprung thereunto owing to the resiliency of said arms, said ears heilig secured to the top of the can adjacent to the nozzle B, said ears thus forming the axis of the limbs I-l and consequently of the spout C, whereby the latter may be moved to the nozzle B, so as to have its neck enter the saine and moved therefrom and overturned and laid flat on the top of the can within the rim thereof.
Owing to the limbs lol heilig outturned in opposite directions, the arms G reliably retain their position against the inner side of the ears J and consequently in the openings therein in which they are journaled.
The neck D of the spout is somewhat tapering as is also the inner rim of the nozzle B so that said neck may tighten or wedge in said rim and provide a joint for the parts preventing leakage thereat as the contents of the can are poured out through the nozzle and enter the spout C. The bead or knurl E is adapted to tighten against the edge of the nozzle B and limit the entrance of the spoilt into the latter.
The nozzle is primarily closed by the cap K usual in such cases, and the can has a handle L thereon for evident purposes, it being seen that when said cap is removed the nozzle is opened when the spout may he thrown over toward the nozzle, its neck entering the latter as has been stated. The can may now be decanted or tilted, when its contents will flow through the nozzle into t-he spout and from the latter poured olf and so conveniently directed to a place of reception or deposit. Then the spout may be thrown back and withdrawn or disconnected from the nozzle and folded flat on the top of the can and the cap may be restored if so desired, it being seen that the spout may be turned on the ring F so that its lip may point in any desired direction particularly as shown in Fig. l, where said lip owingto its length clears the handle L and may be turned thereunder if so desired. Again, when the spout is in use on the nozzle, it may be turned to the right or left according to the angle that may be desirably imparted to it for the purposes of pouring otl the contents of the can into a receptacle directly in front of its lip or at either side thereof, in lateral direction, it being evident that the neck D is of the form of a collar open throughout, and the bas-e of the spout C has an opening therein in communication with that of the neck so that the contents of the can may flow from. the nozzle into said neck and then through the latter into the spout when the nose of the latter is available to guide or direct said contents elsewhere as has been stated.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. An attachment for a movable spout of a can, consisting of a divided ring', resilient a'rms continuous Vof the ends of said ring, laterally-extending limbs continuous of said arms, and lears attachable to the can, said ears being adapted to have said limbs mounted thereon, and said ring being adapted to freely embrace said spo-ut.
2. A can provided with a nozzle, and ears,
a movable spout having a neck' adapted to engage tightly said nozzle, a divided ring adapted to freely embrace the exterior of said neck and carry Said spout, resilient arms continuous of the ends of said ring, and laterally extending limbs continuous of saids arms and adapted to be sprung into and mounted on said ears.
3. A can provided With ay nozzle, and ears, a movable spout having a neck adapted to engage tightly said nozzle, said spout having acircumferential channel on the eX- terior thereof, a divided ring freely cmbraoing the Wall of said channel, laterally resilient arms continuous of th-e ends of said ring, and limbs on the terminals of said arms, said limbs being' mounted on said ears.
