WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR WV. RoBEsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carroll, in the county of Carroll and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to furnisl a washing machine of extremely simple and durable construction which can beput on the market at a very low price.
A further object is to provide a washing machine operated by hand power with extremely simple mechanism attached to the cover of the machine, which is easily moved to a position where it will not interfere with placing clothes in the machine, or moving them therefrom.
A further object is to provide simple mechanism whereby reciprocating motion of a handle mounted in a vertical plane imparts vertical reciprocating motion to a plunger within the tub, with a minimum of strain on the parts and a maximum of convenience for 'the operator.
My invention consists in certain details in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in wl1ich Figure 1 shows a sectional view of a side elevation of my improved washing machine. Fig. 2 shows a top or plan view of my machine. Fig. 3 shows a viewof the lower side of my agitator or plunger.
In the accompanying drawings, I have used the numeral 10 to indicate the tub or body of a washing machine which is preferably in the form of a cylinder, and which I preferably construct wholly of metalr My machine is raised from the floor by means of metal legs 11, preferably made of T-bars, which are inclined slightly outwardly from the machine. The cover 12 of my machine may be constructed of metal or of wood preferably the latter. A portion 13 ofthe cover which is adjacent to the wringer rack hereafter described may besecurely attached to' the body of the tub. On the upper side of the cover, I provide a metal bracket comprising two parallel members 14, firmly secured to the upper side thereof, and extending to a point spaced apart from the circumference of the cover. cured to the members 14 near the outer circumference of the cover. Arms 16 and 16 extend from the upper ends of said uprights 18 downwardly and forwardly to points on said members 14. Arms or braces 15 and 15 extend from the upper ends of the uprights 18 to points on the members 14 near their outer ends. The braces 15 and 15 or the arms 16 and 16 respectively may be dispensed with. Between the upper ends of the uprights 18 is rotatably secured a horizontal shaft 17 The members 14, and the arms 15, 16, 15 and 16 are preferably cast in a single piece. Brackets 19 are secured to the body of the tub at points below the respective members 14 and extend upwardly and rearwardly to the ends of the members 14. Mounted in the upper ends of the brackets 19' and in the rear ends ofthe members 14, is a horizontal shaft 20 on which the members 14 rotate freely. Centrally mounted on the shaft 17 is a hub 21 constructed with sockets 21 and 22 Extending upwardly from the socket 21 is a handle 23. Extending toward the middle'of' the'cover fromthe socket 22 is an arm 24. Pivotally mounted on the end of the arm 24 is a downwardly extending arm 25 extending through the of the body of the tub are provided respectively with members of a suitable catch 29. At one side of my tub, I provide a wringer rack with sides and a closed bottom adjacent to the solid portion. 13 of the cover. 35 indicates an ordinary opening and plug.
The parts of my washing machine may be made of various materials. I preferably construct the machine wholly of metal, the tub and plungers being preferably made of sheet metal, the legs of T-bars, and the brackets of T-bars. The arm 24 and the handle 23 are preferably made of tubular iron. Wood may be employed for the handle 23 and other parts if desired.
In practical operation the plunger 27 is operated by means of the handle 23, By
having the cover of my machine hinged at a point spaced apart from the body of the tub, the cover and the plunger 27 are lifted out of the Way when desired. If the plunger and plunger arm are used Without operating mechanism, the labor in operation is considerable. The operator works at a disadvantage in being compelled to stand at the side of the machine and to reach over and Work the plunger arm at a distance from his own body. By my improved device the plunger arm may be worked from a position at the side of the machine, th-us accomplishing a great saving in power. By fulcruming the bell crank lever formed by the handle 23 and the arm 24, at a point between the hinge and the plunger arm 25, the tendency to raise the 1 'id',andi the consequent strain on the parts which would result from fulcruming said handle and armabove the hinge is avoided. The opening in the cover is of sufii cient size to allow some play of the plunger arm and the plunger is thus permitted play over the clothes. Vertical reciprocating motion isimparted to the plunger arm from a handlemounted in a vertical plane by extremely simple means.
The particular advantages which I desire to secure by my invention are the extreme durability of a Washing machine constructed entirely of metal and the great simplicity thereof. I also provide the mechanism described for operating the plunger with a minimum of power and of strain on the machine.
I claim as my invention:
In a device of the class described, a tub body, a cover member constructed with a central opening of proper size to permit free play of the plunger arm hereinafter mentioned, brackets secured to said tub body and extending to a point spaced apart from the upper circumference thereof, brackets on said cover hinged to said first named brackets at a point spaced apart from said tub body, upward extensions on said brackets on said cover spaced apart from the center of the cover, a cross member rotatably mounted in said upward extensions, a hub centrally located onsaid cross member, a plunger in said tub body, a plunger arm secured to said plunger and extending upwardly therefrom through said cover, an arm pivoted to said plunger arm, and secured to said hub, a handle secured to said hub.
