STUMP-PULLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 5, 1911. Serial No. 647,617.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. ELLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellson, in the county of Pine and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-Pullers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to stump pullers and has for its object to construct a device of this character which may be moved from place to place upon a field.
A further object of the invention is to produce a stump puller whereby the strain upon the pulling chain is equally distributed and greater power for pulling obtained.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrange ment of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the inclined supporting posts which are connected at their upper ends to form a supporting frame. A cap 2 is mounted upon the ends of the posts 1 and is formed with a central opening 3 in which is swivelly mounted an eye bolt 4, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. To the lower ends of the two rear posts 1 are pivot-ally connected runners 5.v The runners 5 are pivotally connected to the posts 1 by plates 6 through which are passed bolts 7, said bolts passing through openings 8 formed in the posts 1 and runners 5. The lower ends of the posts 1 are rounded as at 9 in the drawings, whereby the runners are permitted to rock when passing over rough or uneven ground. To the lower end of the forward post 1 is .pivotally connected the shoe 10, the outer end of which is provided with a ring 11. When it is desired to move the device from place to place, a draft animal may be attached to the forward runner.
The posts 1 are held in their spaced and rigid relation by braces 12. The device further consists of upper and lower hangers 13 and 14, respectively. The hanger 13 is formed from metal and consists of a band 15 having formed therein a plurality of spaced openings 16. Arranged directly above the ring 15 is a circular plate 17, the same being provided with a central opening 18 through which is passed an eye bolt 19, the upper end of which is provided with a hook 20, said hook being adapted to engage the eye bolt 4 carried by the cap 2. The plate 17 is thickened or reinforced at its central portion as at 21 in the drawing. The plate 17 is provided adjacent its periphery with a plurality of spaced perforations 22 in which the upper threaded ends of the inclined connecting rods 23 pass and are secured by clamping nuts 24. The lower ends of the rods 23 are provided with horizontal threaded extensions 25 which pass through the openings 16 formed in the band 15 and are secured in place by nuts 26.
Rigidly connected to the band 15 and at points between the openings 16 formed therein are the upper bifurcated ends 27 of pulley brackets 28, the lower ends of which are provided with extensions 29, and to which are swivelly connected the upper ends of pulley frames 30, the number of which pulley frames may be varied. The hanger 14 is formed in a manner similar to the hanger 13 the position of the same being reversed, that is to say, the circular plate 31 is arranged below the band 32 and the pulley. frames 33 are positioned above the band 32. The circular plate 31 is formed with a central opening 34 in which is swivelly connected the upper end of a hook 35.
When the upper and lower frames 13 and 14 are in their operative position, the pulleys 36 of both the upper and lower frames are arranged in substantial alinement, due to the fact that the same are swivelly connected or secured to the bands 15 and 32. A single length of chain 37 is provided and has its inner end connected to the eye bolt 19 carried by the circular plate 17 of the upper hanger. Said chain then passes downwardly and around one of the pulleys mounted upon the lower frame and thence upwardly and over one of the pulleys carried by the upper frame and thence over and around alternate upper and lower pulleys, the outer end of said chain then being passed around a pulley 38 carried by a block 39, said block being detachably connected to the hook 35. a snag or stump. From this construction it will be seen that the strain upon the chain is equally distributed due to the fact that the pulleys upon the upper and lower hangers and around which the chain passes dispose themselves to conform to the line of stress upon the chain and that, upon pull upon the chain, the lower hanger will be drawn upwardly and in an even manner, due to the peculiar arrangement of the pulleys. By swivelly connecting the upper hanger to the cap 2, both the upper and lower hangers may be turned so that the chain may pass in any desired direction without changing the position of the posts.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
In a stump puller, the combination with a supporting frame, of upper and lower hangers, the upper hanger being sWivelly supported by the upper end of the support,
said hangers consisting of circular plates and bands, said plates and bands being spaced apartand connected by a plurality of inclined rods, a plurality of swivelly connected pulleys connected to said bands, a chain having its inner end connected to the upper hanger and being adapted to pass over and around said pulleys whereby the lower hanger is raised or lowered when movement is imparted to said chain.
