To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BAILEY H. VVEsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Makanda, in the county of` Jackson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-Pulling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to newy and useful improvements 1n stump pulling machmes,.
and the main object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character which is of simple and inexpensive construction, reliable and efficient in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stump pullingmachine which is so constructed as to require only a minimum amount of horse power in pulling stumps of various sizes.
`Vith these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described hereinafter and afterward specically claimed.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the stump pulling machine, and showing the same operatively associated with a stump; and K Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the machine.
In order that the construction and operation of the invention may be readily comprehended, I have illustrated an approved embodiment thereof in the acompanying .y
drawings, and will now proceed to fully describe the same in connection with said drawings, in which 1 indicates a pair of parallel side bars which are connected to and supported by the front and rear axles 2 and 3 and constitute the main frame of the machine. Each of the axles is provided with comparatively widened supporting wheels 4 to facilitate an easy passage of the machine over soft ground.
A vertically disposed frame is mounted at the forward end of the main frame and comprises upright posts 5 which are braced and held in position by suitable braces 6. A shaft 7 is mounted in the upper ends of the posts 5 and supports a grooved sheave one direction.

A grooved sheave 12 vis mounted on a shaft 13 supported lby the main frame adjacent the vertical frame andhas a guard 14 kextending under'itl and attached to the shaft 13 in the same manner asthe guard 9. Another shaft 15, which is identical in construction with the shaft 12 is mounted on the main frame removed from the forward end thereof and is also provided with a guard 14.
16 indicates a cross beam mounted transversely between the side bars 1 and supports a rectangular frame 17 which is braced by suitable braces 18. 19 indicates a vertical shaft in the frame 17 and the cross bar 16 which has rigidly mounted thereon a drum 20. The upper end of the shaft 19 has rigidly Vattached to it a ratchet wheel 21 adapted to be engaged by a pawl 22 which serves to hold the drum against rotation in 23 indicates a stop pin to limit the swinging movement of the -pawl when disengaged from the ratchet.
As shown the pull cable 10 is trained around the drum' one or more times and is -extended forwardly of the machine and has attachedto it, a clevis 241 to which swingletrees 25 are connected, it being of course understood that any other suitable draft means may be attached to the clevis.
26' indicates a sheave block having a hook 27 which is adapted to engage a stump encircling element, such as a chain or the likeV 28. The forward end of the cable 11 is extended from the crossrod 10 around the sheave 26, over the sheave 8 and under the sheave 12'to the drum.
As shown the machine is adapted to be positioned relative to the stump so that the latter is in a position between the upright posts 5 so as to enable a direct upward pull to be exerted on the stump.
Guide rollers 29 are supported by the rectangular frames 17 and are positioned on opposite sides of the pull cable and serve to maintain the cable coiled around the drum in proper position. It is also to be noted that by virtue of the guards for each sheave,
the cable willv be prevented from jumping off of the shea-ves during the pulling of the frame at the forward end of the main frame,
a sheave mounted in the upper end of said vertical frame, a cross rod mounted in the vertical frame beneath said sheave7 a sheave mounted at the bottom of the vertical frame, a sheave block having a hook, both of said last named sheaves mounted in a vertical plane with said upper sheave, a drum earried by the rear end of the main frame in a vertical plane with said last named sheave block, a sheave mounted on the main frame between and in longitudinal alinement with said drum and the sheave atthe bottom of the vertical frame, a. pull cable trained around said drum ovei` said last named sheave, under they sheave at the bottom of the vertical frame, over the sheave at the upper end of the vertical frame and arouno said hook sheave block, means for rigidly attaching the terminal of the cable to said cross bar, stump encircling means adapted to be engaged by said hook sheave block,l
