Application led May Y29d, 1911. Serial-No. 629,978.
\ To all whom t may concern:
vBe it known that I, EUGENE VoN VARGYAs,
f a subject of the King of Hungary, residingl at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny 5. and State of Pennsylvania, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.'
This invention relates to a collapsible receptacle, and more particularly to that4 type of receptacle commonly styled a Foldable paper drinkingY cup.
The primary object of my invention is to with a base that can be easily carried within the collapsible cup, when not in use and quickly attached to the bottom of the cup to provide a substantial base or support for the same..
Another object of my invention v is to. provide a base plate for flexible receptacles that can be placed in engagement with the folded edges of the receptacle to maintain the same upright and rigid.
A further object of my invention is-to provide a drinking cup that can be used as an advertisement, easily carried and the parts thereof quickly assembled when it is desired to use the same, and a paper, paperoid or other flexible and waterproof material used in its construction.
In the manufacture of paper bags various modes are resorted to, and my invention relates particularly to bags or receptacles in which a properly shaped blank is cut out,
and subsequently so folded over and pasted together at certain points, to form a receptacle.
I am aware of flexible paper drinking cups having been heretofore devised, and in carrying my invention intoeffect, I make use of that type of cup that is made from a long strip of paper of double the length of the bag Vto be formed, thestrip of Apaper 45` being folded upon itself and the edges cut to produce flanges that are adhesively connected to the edges o'f the blank, thus forming a receptacle having an open end anda solid or seamless bottom. The advantage of using such a cup will hereinafter appear, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof `are susceptible to such changes as fall within bent upon itself to provide walls 1 and 2,
one edge of'the wall 2 having a flap or iange 3 adhesively secured to the edge of the wall 1., and this wall has a flap or flange 4 adhesively secured to the edge of the Wall 2.
To spread the walls land 2-apart to form a receptacle, the edges of the Walls, adjacent to the lower ends thereof are pressed inwardly, to flatten the bottom of the receptacle, as at 5 and provide tapering tri-angular shaped oppositely disposed tongues 6.
The base for the receptacle comprises a` disk 7 and riveted or otherwiseconnected to said disk, as at 8 are oppositely disposed segment-shaped retaining members 9 having the straight edges thereof arranged in parallelism. The means employed for securing the members to the disk 7 are preferably located at the ends` of said members, and the said members made of a flexible material, as heavy cardboard, the tongues 6 can be`easily slipped under the straight edges 10 of said members. It is preferable to make the members and the disk 7 of light-and durable cardboard, although any other suitable material can be used, and the receptacle is made of waterproof material, whereby a liquid can be held Within the receptacle and supported by the base thereof. A
When the cup is not in use and is collapsed, the base is placed within the flattened cup and it is in this form'that the cups can be disposed of, either for a small sum of money or as an advertisement.
In lieu of the segment-shaped members 9 straps can be used and in some instances the members can be formed integral with the disk 7, as would be the case if a strip of the cardboard had the ends thereof bent land r riveted to the body ofthe strip.y
As will be readily understood, by; the use of either the segment-shaped mem ers 9 or straps, pockets will'be formed into which the tongues of the collapsible portion of the cup pass.
What I claim is 1. In a, drinking cup, `aJ collapsible receptacle adapted to have the lower edges thereof bent to provide tongues, and a base detachably supported by the tongues of said receptacle. i
2. In a, drinking cup, a collapsible reeeptuele adapted to have the lower edges thereof bent to provide tongues, and a, base of greater diameter than said receptacle, and, adapted to be detachably connected to said tongues.
3. In a drinking cup, a collapsible receptacle, a disk, segment-shaped members carried by said disk and adapted to hold op.
poslitely disposed lower edges of said receptac e.
4:. A drinking cup comprising a col- I.
and adapted to engage the tongues of said A receptacle.V
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
