OAR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
Application filed May 12, 1910. Serial No. 560,894. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD L. KnnnY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at West Lynn, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Oar- Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to oarlocks.
The object of the invention resides in so constructing an oarlock that the oar receiving fork thereof may be shifted and positioned so as to be disposed outwardly of the boat side with the arms of said fork projecting upwardly when it is desired to use the lock; and in turn shifted and positioned so as to be disposed inwardly of the boat side with the arms of said fork projecting clownwardly when the lock is not in use.
To this end the invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fragment of a boat side with the improved oarlock associated therewith; the oar receiving fork being shown disposed outwardly of the boat side in full lines and inwardly thereof in dotted lines; and Fig. 2, a side elevation of what is shown in full lines in Fig. 1 with certain portions thereof broken away.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates a 7 fragment of a boat side to which the improved oarlock is attached. Disposed upon the upper edge of the side 10 and secured thereto in any suitable manner is a pair of base plates 11 and 12 having their adjacent ends in interlocking engagement as at 13. Disposed upon the upper face of the plate 11 is a lug 14 provided with a. recess 15, while a corresponding lug 16 is formed on the upper face of the plate 12 which is likewise provided with a recess 17 disposed in opposition to the recess 15 of the lug 14.
An arcuate member 18 has one terminal thereof extended laterally and reduced as at 19; said reduced terminal 19 extending into the recess 15 of the lug 14. Likewise the other terminal of the arcuate member 18 is extended laterally and reduced as at 20, said reduced terminal extending into the recess 17 of the lug 16. By this construction it will be apparent that the arcuate member 18 is rotatably mounted between the lugs 14 and 16 whereby the intermediate portion of said member may be shifted so as to be disposed exteriorly or interiorly of the boat side 10 as desired. The central portion of the arcuate member 18 is enlarged as at 21 and provided with a transverse aperture 22 through which latter a stem 23 of an oar receiving fork 24 is inserted. The outer end of said stem 23 is threaded for the reception of a nut- 25 whereby said stem is secured against removal from the aperture 22, and a rotatable mounting of the oar receiving fork 24 on the arcuate member 18 is effected. I
The arcuate member 18 is provided at corresponding pointson opposite sides of its center with projections 26 and 27 adapted to engage the upper faces of the plates 11 and 12 respectively to support the arcuate member in horizontal position when the central portion of the latter is disposed exteriorly of the boat side:
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that should it be desired to make a landing with a boat equipped with the improved oarlock, the latter may be easily shifted so as to be disposed interiorly of the boat and thus removed from possible injury.
WVhat is claimed is:
The combination in a device such as described, of a base comprising a pair of interlocking plates, socketed lugs extending from the plates, an arcuate member movably.
mounted in the said socketed lugs, a bearing formed upon the arcuate member, lugs formed upon the arcuate member and sup porting the same in a horizontal position and the bearing in a vertical position by their engagement with the plates,'and an oar receiving fork journaled in the said bearing.
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
CLIFFORD L. KEDDY.
