JOHN C. F. JOHNSON AND JOHN HAR'I'MAN, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
TOOL-HANDLE.
To all whom it may concern:
\ tool which fits between the sections.
Be it known that we, JOHN C. F. JOHN- SON and JOHN HARTMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Tacoma, 1n the county of Pierce and State of Washington,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools, more particularly improvements in the handles for tools adapted for supporting and carrying a screwdriver, or similar device.
An object of this invention is to peculiarly form a handle for receiving a screw-driver to hold the same extended ready for use, or retain the screw-driver therein, out of the way.
A further object of this invention is to provide a handle with a novel bushing member receiving the screw driver when ready for use or when turned in out of the way, and which is so peculiarly constructed that it holds the screw-driver firmly in eitherposition.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the fol= lowing description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side of the tool handle, parts being broken away to disclose the position of the bushing therein, and showing the screw-driver turned inwardly; Fig. 2 is a similar view disclosing the screwdriver turned outwardly; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the handle sections, the bushing fitting in the handle section and the screwdriver, the same being detached from one another; and Fig. 4 is a section view on the line 4l1 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indi cated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, 10 and 11 are the opposite sections of a tool handle with a blade 12 interposed therebetween. The blade 12 is preferably in the form of a putty-knife of approved form, although the handle may be applied to any other type {if T e sections 10 and 11 are held against the sides of the blade 12 by rivets 18, one of which,
13, passes centrally through the sections.
A ferrule 14 engages over the outer ends of Specification of Letters Patent.

therein through the recess 15.

the sections 10 and 11 to further reinforce and hold the same in position.
The handle section 10 is recessed, as at 15, in its inner face, the recess opening through the outer end of the section 10 and being reduced at its inner end to provide shoulders 16. The rivet 13 passes through the handle section 10 at the inner end of a bushing 17 located in the recess 15.
The bushing 17 comprises a plate having flanges 18 at its opposite longitudinal edges, the plate being enlarged at one end and the flanges 18 being offset at such enlarged portion of the plate to provide enlarged and reduced pockets 19 and 20 respectively, and forming shoulders 21. The bushing 17 is provided with a spring tongue 22 struck from the base or plate portion of the same and extending longitudinally thereof, the tongue having a detent 28, formed preferably by a transverse crimp in the tongue, adjacent to its free end and outwardly of the shoulders 21. The bushing is fitted in the recess 15, engaging the closed or fiat side thereof against the inner wall of the slot 15 bringing the shoulders 21 against the shoulders 16, and positioning the outer end of the bushing 17 slightly inward of the end of the handle section 10. The tongue 22 normally springs in between the flanges 18 in the enlarged pocket 19.
The screw-driver which is carried in the bushing is provided with a blade portion 24, of usual form, having an enlarged butt 25 provided with shoulders 26. A nail-groove 27 is formed in the outer side of the butt 25 at its inner edge, and a depression or notch 28 is formed in the same side at the outer end of the butt 25.
The screw-driver is detachable within the bushing, and when not in use is inserted The screwdriver 24 engages in the reduced pocket 20 while the butt 25 rests within the enlarged pocket 19, engaging the shoulders 26 against' the shoulders 21 and admitting only a small portion of the butt 25 to protrude through the handle vto admit of the engagement of the finger with the nail-groove 27. In this position the detent 23 rests in the notch 28 and yieldingly holds the screw-driver from displacement. When the screw-driver is to be used it is drawn out and reversed, en-
gaging the butt 25 in the enlarged pocket 19 and against the shoulders 21. The blade portion 24 of the screw-driver extends out '3 casing open at its ends.
through the recess 15 frorn the butt 25 and i is incased in metal housing to hold it from vibration, the housing comprising the plate and flanges of the bushing 17 and the flat inner end of the putty-knife 12 against which thebus'hing rests. It is thus seen that the screw-driver engages the metal p0rtion of the handle and is prevented from vibration by the walls of the bushing and the blade 12. The butt 25 is yieldingly held in this position by the detent 23 which engages in the notch 28.
In assembling the handle, and positioning the bushing therein, the bushing is first inserted in the recess 15 engaging the flattened closed side thereof against the inner wall of the recess. The handle sect-ions 10 and 11 are now positioned against the opposite sides of the blade 12 and riveted in such position. The outer edges of the flanges of the bushing 17 rest against one side of the blade 12, forming a complete housing or The rivet 13 passes through the handle sections 10 and 11 against the inner end of the bushing, preventing the inward moving of the same when under pressure. It is also seen that it is necessary to provide only one of the i '3 the blade, a bushing fitted in the recess and.
i fitted in the recess and open at the side next.
handle sections, 10, with a recess, as the opposite handle section is of the usual common form.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A tool including a pair of handle sections, a blade carried between the handle sections, one of the handle sections having a recess in its inner face opening against open at the side next to the bladeand closed by the same, and a reversible screw-driver engaging through the outer end of the handle section into the bushing.
2. A tool comprising a pair of handle sections, a blade engaging between the handle sections, one of the handle sections having a recess in its inner face opening through its outer end and against the blade, a bushing to the blade and closed by the same and having an inwardly extending spring tongue provided with a detent adjacent its free end,
1 H and a reversible screw-driver having spaced notches for the reception of the detent when inserted in the bushing.
3. A tool comprising a pair of handle sections one of which has a recess in its inner side opening throughits outer end, a blade carried between the handle sections and closbutt engaging in opposite directions in the enlarged pocket to project the blade portion into the reduced pocket and out through the handle, and retaining means carried within the recess for yielding engagement with the screw-driver. 4
4. A tool comprising a pair of handle sections one of which has a recess in its inner face, a bushing fitting in the recess and having shoulders midway of its ends, said bushing being open at the side next to the blade and closed by the same, a screw-driver having shoulders midway of its ends, adapted to engage into the bushing and having spaced grooves in one side, and a spring operated detent carried within the bushing for engagement in the grooves.
5. A tool comprising a handle having a recess in its central portion open through its outer end, the recess being reduced at its inner end providing shoulders, a bushing fitting in the recess and having shoulders ad- 'acent to its ends en a in a ainst the shoulders in the recess, a reversible screwdriver carried in the bushing and having shoulders midway of its ends for engagement against the shoulders within the bushing, and a spring member carried within the recess and engaging with the screw-driver to yieldingly hold the same within the bushing.
6. A tool including a pair of handle sections, a blade carried between the handle sections, one of the handle sections having a recess in its inner face opening against the blade and closed by the same, and a reversible screw driver engaging through the outer end of the handle section and into the recess.
7. A tool comprising a pair of handle sections, a blade engaging between the handle sect-ions, one of the handle sections having a recess in its inner face opening through its outer end and against the blade and closed by the same and having an inwardly extend- In testimony whereof, we aflix our signa tures in presence of two witnesses.
