- This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cuff presses and more particularly to the machine shown in my application for cuff press executed December 31, 1910, filed March 1, 1911, Serial No. 611,712, the object being to provide means for holding the goods support permanently and positively parallel to the pressing head.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BARTIIOLO- MEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cuff presses and more particularly to the machine shown in my application for cuff press executed December 31, 1910, filed March 1, 1911, Serial No. 611,712, the object being to provide means for holding the goods support permanently and positively parallel to the pressing head.
Another object of the invention is to improve the general construction of operating mechanism for the goods support whereby the same will be operated in such a manner that, when forced inwardly, it will be held rigidly in order to prevent the same from tilting in either direction, whereby, when pressure is applied to the treadle, the same will be forced upwardly into engagement with the pressing head in such a manner that the goods thereon will be pressed without any danger of wrinkling the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide operating mechanism which is exceedingly simple in construction, the parts being so arranged and connected together that they may be easily adjusted to take up the wear in order to true the goods support.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a double cuff press showing one of the goods supports in pressing position and the other extended in position to receive the goods to be pressed; Fig. 2 is a front elevation, the upper portion of the machine being broken away; Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a detail section showing the manner of adjusting the goods support, taken on line 55 of Fig. 2.

which is of the ordinary construction, as shown in my former Patent, No. 952,721, March 22, 1910 and is only shown to clearly illustrate the operation of my improved mechanism for operating the goods support in connection therewith.
The operating mechanism is shown in duplicat e in order to permit an alternating presslng operation of the pressing members and a description of the mechanism for operating one goods support will, therefore, be suflicient for both. Extending outwardly from the standard 2 is a bracket 5 having forked arms 6 between which are mounted bearing sleeves 7 and shafts 8,
said sleeves being provided with vertical bearings 9 in which are mounted supporting rods 10. The supporting rods are provided with yielding connections 11 at their lower ends for connecting the same to the respective operating treadles 12 of a treadle mechanism as shown in my former Patent No. 952,721, March 22, 1910, said mechanism having the usual releasing treadles 13 and levers 1 1. Surrounding the rods above the bearings 9 are yielding stops 15 similar to those disclosed in my former patent. The upper end of each rod is threaded, upon which is adj ustably mounted a sleeve 16 by nuts 17, said sleeve having oppositely disposed slotted arms 18 on which is mounted the slotted base portion 19 of a supporting member 20 which is provided with a bifurcated upper end between which is pivotally mounted a base 21 of the goods support 41 on a pivot shaft 22.
The base 21 of the goods support is provided with the usual handle 23 for moving the same in and out of position to be reciprocated by the treadle mechanism previously described. Connected to the base 21 of the goods support is a rearwardly extending arm 24 carrying a friction roller 25 adapted to travel in a cam slot 26 of a plate 27 carried by a bracket 28 extending outwardly from the standard 2 below the head 3. The cam slot is provided with an inclined portion 29 and a vertical portion 30 for guiding the goods support and itwill be seen that when the goods support is swung inwardly, it will be held permanently and positively parallel to the pressing head by the roller 25 of the arm 24 traveling in the inclined portion 29 of the cam slot 26. It will be seen that, after the goods support has been pressed inwardly, and pressure has been applied to the operating treadle of the treadle mechanism, the roller will travel upwardly in the vertical portion of the cam slot so that when in a pressing position, it will be held.
In order to prevent the goods support from tilting in either direction, when being reciprocated by the operating treadle, the base 21 is provided with a lug 81 and the support 20 with a lug 32, which lugs engage each other when swung into a vertical position in order to prevent the goods support from tilting forwardly. For preventing any backward tilting of the goods support, I provide the plate 27 with a stop 33 which is engaged by the base of the goods support, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, in such a manner that it is free to move vertically in order to allow the goods support to be reciprocated in order to press the goods within the pressing head.
Extending'through the slotted portions of the arms 18 and base 19, are bolts 34 for locking said members in respect to the pressing head, By this arrangement, the goods support may be easily and quickly set in a true position in relation to the pressing head in order to allow the same to pass into the pressing head when reciprocated in such a manner that the goods arranged thereon will be pressed evenly.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a cuff press with a pair of pressing heads and goods supporting members adapted to be reciprocated and moved laterally into and out of engagement with the respective heads alternately in order to allow one of the pair of cooperating members to be pressing an article while the other goods support is in position to receive an article to be pressed.
It will also be seen that novel means are provided for holding the goods support in its movement parallel to the pressing head and also for preventing the same from rock 1ng.
Extending outwardly from the standard 2 is a bracket 36 in which is adjustably mounted by a set screw 37 a stem 38 of a table support 39 upon which the table top secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a cuff press, the combination with a operating said goods support, means for pivotally mountingsaid member, and means for guiding said goods support parallel to said head during its vertical and horizontal movement.

4. In a cuff press, the combination with a pressing head, of a pivotally mounted reciprocating member, a goods support adjustably mounted vertically and transversely upon said reciprocating member, and means for guiding said goods support parallel to said head in its vertical and horizontal movement.
5. In a cult press, a standard, a pressing head thereon, a reciprocating member, a goods support adjustably mounted on said reciprocating member, a cam guide carried by said standard, and an arm carried by said goods support'provided with a roller working in said cam guide.
6. In a cult press, a standard, a pressing head thereon, a bracket extending from said standard, a plate carried by said bracket provided with a cam slot, an oscillating reciprocating member, a goods support carried by said member, and an arm carried by said goods support provided with a roller working in said cam slot for holding said goods support parallel to said pressing head during its vertical and horizontal movement.
7. In a cuff press, a reciprocating memher, a support adjustably mounted upon said reciprocating member provided with a lug, a goods support pivotally mounted on said first mentioned support provided with a co-acting lug, and a stop adapted to be engaged by said goods support.
8. In a cutl' press, a standard, a pressing head thereon, a reciprocating member, a goods support pivotally mounted at the upper end of said reciprocating member, a plate carried by said standard having an inclined slot terminating in a vertical slot,
and an arm carried by said goods support having a roller working in said slot.
9.. In a cuff press, the combination with a standard having a pressing head, of a reciprocating member pivotally supported by said standard, a goods support pivotally carried by said member, stops for holding said goods support when said member assumes a vertical position, and a treadle mechanism for operating said member.
10. In a cuff press, the combination with a standard provided with a pressing head, of a pivotally mounted reciprocating member, a goods support pivotally carried by said member, stops for holding said goods support in a rigid position when said member is thrown into a vertical position, and means for guiding said goods support parallel to said head.
11. A cuff press comprising a standard having a pressing head, a bracket carried by said standard, a plate carried by said bracket provided with an inclined slot terminating in a vertical slot, a stop extending upwardly from said plate, a pivotally mounted reciprocating member, a goods support pivotally carried by said member adapted to engage said stop, and an arm carried by said goods support carrying a roller working in the slot of said plate for guiding said goods support parallel to said pressing head.
12. In a cuff press, the combination with a pressing head, of a pivotally mounted reciprocating member, a goods support pivotally mounted on said reciprocating mem ber, co-acting lugs carried by said goods support and reciprocating member, and a stop carried by said standard adapted to be engaged by said goods support when said reciprocating member is thrown into a vertical position.
13. In a cuff press, the combination with a standard provided with a pressing head,
of a pivotally mounted reciprocating supporting rod, a sleeve adjustably mounted on said rod provided with oppositely disposed arms, a supporting member adjustably mounted on said arms, a goods support pivotally mounted on said supporting member, means for guiding said goods support parallel to said pressing head, and a treadle mechanism for reciprocating said rod.
14. In a cufi press, the combination with a standard provided with a pressing head, of a pivotally mounted reciprocating member, a goods support pivotally carried by said member, means for guiding said goods support parallel to the head during its vertical and horizontal movement, stops for holding said goods support rigid when said reciprocating member assumes a vertical position, and a treadle mechanism for operating said member.
15. In a cuif press, the combination with a standard having a pressing head, of a coacting goods support, a bracket carried by said standard, a plate provided with a cam slot carried by said bracket, a stop formed on said plate adapted to be engaged by said goods support, and an arm carried by said goods support provided with a roller working in said slot for guiding said goods support parallel to said pressing head.
16. In a press, the combination with a pressing head, of a pivotally mounted reciprocating member, a co-acting goods support pivotally mounted on said member and movable vertically and horizontally in respect to said head, and means for guiding said support parallel to said head in its vertical and horizontal movement.
