CONCRETE FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 27, 1911.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
Seria] No. 640,867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. FoRsY'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Curranville, in the county of Crawford, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concrete Fence- Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in concrete fence posts, and has for its principal object to provide such a post with a novel form of wire attaching means.
Another object of the invention is to provide a post with an attaching means which may be either employed for securing either single strands of wire or mesh wire.
A further object of the invention is to provide a post of the character described which is simple in construction, easy of molding and cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fence post constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the T-bolt. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the metal insert.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
Referring to the drawings, the post body is formed of any suitable plastic composition and is designated by the reference numeral 5. Embedded in the body when the article is molded, is a plurality of metal inserts which are each designated by the reference numeral 6. Each insert consists of a body 7 having opposed lateral wings 8 8.
Formed inthe inner face of the body and in the same plane as the wings, is a recess 9, the outer edges thereof being rabbeted as at 10 for the reception of a closure element 11.
Formed in the body 7 and communicating with the outer face 12 thereof and with the recess 8 is a vertical transverse opening 13. The outer faces 12 of said inserts are disposed flush with the face of the post body, and the wings 8 are embedded in said body and are thereby adapted to retain said inserts against outward movements.
In order to clamp the strand wires 14 of a fence to the post, there is provided a clamping bar 15 which is formed with a plurality of spaced openings 16 corresponding in number, size and position to the transverse openings 13 of the inserts. The strands 14 are placed in their proper positions against the post body, and the bar 15 is placed over the strands. The heads 17 of T-bolts are then passed through the respective alined openings of the bar and inserts, and then turned a quarter of a circle to the position, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Vashers 18 and nuts 19 are then attached to the outer ends of the bolts, and by this means the strands 14 are securely clamped to the fence body. It will also be observed that the closure elements 11 prevent any possibility of the composition closing the respective recesses when the post is molded.
What is claimed is:
1. A fence postcomprising in combination, a plastic body, a plurality of metal inserts molded in said body, each insert having its outer face flush with the outer face of the body and having a recess formed in its inner face and a transverse opening communicating with said recess, a clamping bar associated with said body, and T-bolts having their heads disposed within the recesses of the inserts and their Shanks engageable with the bar to clamp said bar to the post.
2. A fence post comprising in combination, a plastic body, a plurality of metal inserts molded in said body, each insert having its outer face iiush with the outer face of the body and having a recess formed in its inner face and a transverse opening communicating with said recess, opposed lateral wings extending from each insert and disposed in the same plane as the recesses of said insert, a clamping bar associated With said body, and T-bolts having their heads disposed Within the recesses of the inserts and their Shanks engageable With the bar to clamp said bar to the post.
3. A fence post comprising in combination, a plastic body, a plurality o'f Inet-al inserts molded in said body, each insert having its outer face iinsh With the outer face of the body and having a recess formed in its outer face and a transverse opening communicating with said recess, the outer edges of the recesses being respectively rabbeted, closure elements seated Within said rabbeted edges, opposed lateral Wings extending from each insert and disposed in the same plane as the recesses of said insert, a clamping bar associated With said body, and T-bolts having their heads disposed Within the recesses of the inserts and their shanks engageable With the bar to clamp said bar to the post.
4. A metal insert for concrete fence posts consisting of a body having opposed lateral Wings extending from the inner face thereof, said body having a recess formed in its inner face, the outer edges of the recess being rabbeted, a closure element seated Within saidrabbeted edges of the recess, said body being further formed With a vertical transverse opening communicating With the outer face of the body and With the recess thereof.
In testimony whereof, I affix iny signature, in presence of tvvo Witnesses.
