CARf-UNDERFRAME.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 9, 1909. Serial No. 488,912.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT WV. WoLrF, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-I Tnderframes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention though it is to be understood thatthe invention is not limited to the exact details of const-ruction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof will occur to persons skilled in the art.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of one end of a car underframe provided with the invention. Fig. 2 is a relatively central longitudinal section the section beingtaken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken back of one of the cross bearers or needle beams on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of Fig. 1 taken on line 4 4 looking toward the bolster. Fig. 5 is an end elevational view showing the end sill and slotted center sill. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary and enlarged plan view of the end portion of the center sill showing its connection with the end sill and the bolster. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary enlarged section the section being taken on line 7 7 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view on the line 8 8 of Fig. 2, the parts being considerably enlarged. Fig. 9 is a detail fragmentary side elevation, the cross-bearer being seen in end elevation.
Referring to the parts, 1 is a single rolled center sill member either an I-beam or an H section which is placed with its web 2 vertically disposed and with its upper and lower flanges 3 4horizontally disposed, the sill being slotted in different places along its length as hereinafter pointed out, while the end portion is slotted longitudinally so as to receive in the slotted portion a draft rigging not shown.
5 5 are the end sills which are of considerably less depth than said center sill, the lower flange of the channel end sill 5 being in alinement with the upper edge of the slot cutV longitudinally in the center sill. In this construction it has been sought to avoid weakening the center sill to any considerable extent because of enlarged openings in the web portion thereof and to that end the built up body bolsters shown in elevation in Fig. 4 and in section in Fig. 7 are provided with pressed and'flanged diaphragms 6 whose inner vertical flanges 7 are connected by rivets which extend continuously through said flanges 7 and through the intervening web 2 of the center sill, thereby providing closely juxtaposed bolster diaphragms which are in fact connected by a direct connecting means, the means in the present instance comprising the rivets 8.
The bolster diaphragms are also provided with flanges 9 which extend along the entire bottom side of said diaphragms and flanges 10, which extend from the vertical flanges 7 outwardly practically to the ends of said diaphragms 6. The bottom flanges 9 rest upon the outstanding flanges 4 of the center sill and are riveted to said flanges by vertically disposed rivets 11, as best shown in Figs. 4 and 7. A bottom bolster cover plate 12 is provided, which extends continuously practically from end to end of the bolster' and is riveted to the outstanding bottom flanges of the bolster diaphragms as well as to the outstanding bottom flanges 4 of the center sill. A top bolster cover plate 13 is riveted to the top flanges 10 of the bolster diaphragms and extends longitudinally of the holsters some little distance below the top flanges 3 of the center sill, this cover plate extending continuously from end to end of bolster in the preferred construction, the center sills being reinforced by heavy angles 14 secured by suitable rivets to the web of the center sill above the bolster cover plate 13 and by vertical rivets through the horizontal legs of said angles 14 to bolster cover plate 13 and the outstanding flanges 10 along the Aupper side of the bolster diaphragms.
It is to be understood that the bolster is provided with relatively parallel diaphragms 6 with outstanding fianges, as shown in the sectional view Fig. 7, and the rivets 8 before referred to are provided to connect the diaphragms which are in alinement, there being two rows of said rivets 8 at each bolster.
The crossbearers or needle beams comprise the horizontal angles '16 which extend through relatively triangular openings or slots 17 in the webs of the center sill and extend continuously outwardly below the horizontal web of the side connecting member, which is provided with inner vertical flange 13 and outer dependingflange 19, rivets 2O extending through the horizontal leg of the angles 16 and the horizont-al web of the Z shaped side connecting member while rivets 21 extend horizontally through the vertical leg 19 of said Z shaped side connecting member and through angular connecting members 22 by means of which said Z shaped member is secured to the crossbearers or needle beams. The lower angles 23 of said crossbearers extends through triangular openings 17 in said web 2 of the center sill and are connected with the upper angles by means of rivets passing through the overlapping vertical legs of the angles 16-23 by means of plates 25 riveted to both and by means of angular web connected plates 26, which latter have flanges riveted through the vertical legs of the angles 16H23 and to the web of said center sill. The plates 26 extend above the angles 16 of the lcross bearers so as to afford a sufficient connection to the center sill web. Secured to the inner faces of the end sills are angles 30 connected with which are diagonal braces 31 which extend rearwardly and outwardly and are connected with the horizontal web of the side connection members, as best shown in plan view Fig. 1.
It will be noted that the top bolster cover plate 13 is turned up at its outer ends, as best shown in Fig. 4 and is riveted to the inner vertical leg 18 of the Z shaped side member. This Z shaped side member is not a sill in the sense that the word sill is used to indicate a principal carrying member of an underframe, but serves as a support for the wood nailing strips 32 and connects the outer ends of the end sill, holsters and cross bearers or needle beams so as to stiffen the underframe and by means of the other connections shown to throw the load inwardly to the center sill. The body holsters, as shown in Fig. 4, are provided with side bearings 33 while vertical stiening members 34C extend between the top and bottom diaphragm flanges so as to stiften the bolster at those points.
