To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Guoncn EDWIN HORM- BREY, a subject of the King of England, residing in Crown street, Northwich, in the county of Chester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Connected with Luggage and Like Carriers for Cycles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a new or improved carrier, more particularly for use by shop keepers on cycles, and for carrying children; and has for its object to provide a carrier, which may be readily applied to and detached from the cycle, the elements of the combination if permanently secured to the cycle being of such a nature as not to interfere with the use of the cycle for general purposes.
According to my invention, I provide, in combination, a carrier, which consists essentially of two side arms, and means of attaching said arms to the cycle headin cantaliver fashion-at two points, one above the other, the upper point of attachment being behind the lower point of attachment, in order that the carrier may be firmly supported, when weighted.
Drawings illustrating two modes of carrying out my invention are annexed hereto, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of one arrangement. Figs. 3 and 4 are, respectively, elevation, partly in section and plan view of a modification.
Referring first more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, a and I) represent, respectively, upper and lower lugs integral with the cycle head 0, a and 12 being grooves or recesses in said lugs, respectively.
(Z are metallic side members, adapted to be secured to said lugs a and b by means of bolts 6 and f, which, passing through apertures in said side members d, rest within the recesses a b in said lugs, a, b, respectively.
e f are wing nuts, by means of which the carrier, as a whole is firmly secured to the cycle head.

which strips may be adjustable, when required.
It will be seen that when a Weight, as for instance, a basket or the like is placed upon the carrier, the pressure on the lower bolt f is downwardly, and the upper bolt 6 tends to rotate, about an arc, struck from the center of bolt f, but is retained in position by the side wall of the groove or recess a.
By slacking back the nuts 6 f and removing bolt e, the side members (Z carrying the lower bolt f with nuts f upon it, may be removed from the cycle head 0: the only portion of the appliance, integral with the head, e. not removable, being the lugs a and b, which do not appreciably mar the appearance of the head.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4:, his a sleeve of metal or wood in two parts, said sleeve being held in the desired position on the head 0 by the bolts 6, f, and wing nuts 6 f, to which bolts are also detachably connected the side arms (Z.
The sleeve and parts connected thereto may be entirely removed from the cycle head 0, when the carrier is not required.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a carrier consisting of side members having apertures one above the other, one end of each of said side members being turned upwardly; supporting elements having apertures attached to a cycle head; bolts passing through the apertures in said side members and supporting elements; and means for preventing disengagement of said bolts from said side members and supporting elements; the arrangement being such that the upper point of attachment of said side members is behind the head and the lower point of attachment in the front thereof.
2. In combination, lugs at the front and rear of a cycle head, grooves in said lugs, carrier side members having holes therein, and bolts passed through said holes in said side members and adapted to rest within the grooves in said lugs, and nuts on said bolts.
3. In a carrier the combination with the head of a cycle, of supporting elements attached to the head in front and rear thereof, side members having an upturned end and provided With apertures one above the other in said end, bolts passing through apertures in said side members and engaging the supporting elements, the upper point of engagement of the side members being behind the head and the lower point of engagement in front thereof whereby the side members are supported in cantaliver form. 10
