MILK-BOTTLE HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VILLIAM E. PHILLIPS, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of (Juyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Bottle Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is a milk bottle holder or receptacle of that type in which the bottle is locked in the holder so that it cannot be removed except by an authorized person.

A feature of the device is, that a full bottle will be locked in the holder when inserted, while an empty bottle will not, and the latter may be removed without unlocking the box. The locking action is automatic, so that a full bottle may be quickly placed in the device and will remain therein until the lock is manipulated.

Various other advantages and improvements will be evident from the following description and the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings--Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of the holder, at a right angle to each other. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail of the lock.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 is a cylindrical outer casing which is open at the bottom, where it is provided with a swinging lid or plate 6, which is simply for the purpose of closing the same and may be swung to open or closed position as desired. The casing is closed at the top by a permanent cover 7, and is fastened to a support by the strips 8.

Within the casing, and shaped to engage the neck of a bottle inserted through the bottom of the casing, are preferably two spring strips 13, and acting in conjunction with these is another spring strip 12, the latter being fastened at the lower end only, so that it may swing in or out. A piece of metal 11 is fastened to the finger or spring 12, and has a notched upper edge. This piece 11 works through a slot 6* in the side of the casing, and rests against a spring 10, which is attached at its lower end to the outside casing, and is provided at its upper end with a handle 10*, whereby it may be pulled out when desired, to release a bottle in the holder. 12) is a fixed partition or plate in the top of the casing. A pin 16 works up and down through a hole in this plate, and at the lower end of said pin is a head 14, with a spring 15 between the head and the plate to normally press the former downwardly. At the upper end the pin 10 is pivoted at 18 to one end of a lever 17 which is fulcrumed on a pin 18 mounted on the plate 19. At the other end the lever is pivoted at 18 to a pin 16 which works through a hole in the plate 19 and has at its lower end a catch or plate 29 which is adapted to engage in one of the notches in the plate 11 when the pin 16" is pushed down.

The pin 16 has a notch 16 in the side thereof in which will engage a locking plate 23* which is pivoted at 24 to the plate 19 and is pressed to engagement by a spring 20 in tension between the pins 19; and when the pin 16 is pushed up the plate 23 catches in the notch and holds it up until released by the key as illustrated in Fig.

The lock may be of any desired construction. I have shown a casing 21, with a ward 22 therein, and the plate 2; has a flange 23 against which the bit of the key will operate to swing the plate 23 and release it from the notch 16" when the key is turned.

In the use of the device, when a full bottle is pushed up into the holder its head will pass above the supports 13 and the spring 12, and its cover or stopper will then strike the head 14 and push the same up thereby pushing down the catch 29 to engage in one of the notches in the plate 11. The plate engages in the notch 16, thereby looking the parts, after which, when the bottle is released, it will settle back to rest with its bead on the supports and the spring, and thus be held. To remove the bottle it is nec essary first to operate the lock to release the plate 23 as above described, then by pulling out on the knob 10 the spring 12 will be moved outwardly, releasing the neck of the bottle which will then drop out.

\Vhen an empty bottle is inserted in the holder the head 14 will pass down into the mouth of the bottle and consequently the locking device will not be operated but the bottle will nevertheless be caught and held by the springs 12 and 13 until the former is disengaged or released by pulling the handle 10 It will be noted that when a full bottle is insertedthe catch 29 engages in one of the notches in the plate 11 and thereby prevents the latter being pulled out until the lock is released.

Milk bottles placed in the holder willbe inaccessible to insects or animals and also proof against theft.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a holder for bottles or the like, the combination of a casing, holding devices therein engageable below the rim of a bottle placed in the casing, one of said devices being movable laterally to release the bottle, a catch engageable with said movable device to prevent such release, a yielding member located in the casing in position to be struck by the bottle stopper when a bottle is in serted in the casing, the said member being connected to the catch to engage the same with said movable device, and means to release the catch.

2. In a holder for bottles or the like, the combination of a casing open at the bottom to receive a bottle, holding devices at the side of the casing, engageable with the side of the bottle neck to hold the bottle, one of said devices being movable laterally to release the bottle, a catch engageable with said movable device to prevent such release, a spring pressed pin mounted in the casing in position to be struck and operated by the stopper of a full bottle or pass into the mouth of an empty bottle, said pin being operatively connected to the catch to engage the same when a full bottle is inserted, and means to release the catch.

3. In a holder for bottles or the'like, the combination of a casing open at the bottom and closed at the top, holding devices attached to the sides of the casing and engageable with the neck of a bottle inserted in the casing, one of said devices being movable laterally to release the bottle, a pin slidably mounted in the upper part of the casing and movable up and down therein and having a head at its lower end adapted to be struck and lifted by the stopper of a bottle, a catch engageable with said movable holding device to hold the same against release, said catch being operatively connected to the pin, and a lock in the upper part of the casing, having a member engaging the pin when the latter is lifted.

4. In a holder for bottles or the like, the combination of a casing open at one end to receive a bottle therein, holding devices located within the casing and engageable with the bottle, one of said devices being movable to release the bottle and having a notched plate connected thereto, a pin mounted in the casing and slidable lengthwise therein and located in position to be struck by the stopper of a bottle when the latter is inserted in the casing, a lever connected to the pin, a catch connected to the lever and movable thercby into engagement with the notched plate, and a lock having a spring actuated member engageable with the sliding pin to prevent movement thereof until the lock is operated.
