To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that. I, WILLIAM ARTHUR HOLT, a citizen of the United States. and aresidentof Oconto, in the county of Oconto and State of Visconsin, have invented new `\stakes as now practiced.

The body A of -the lo -carrying car is` mounted on the usual truc A and is provided with suitable cross beams A2 for su orting the logs B, as plainly indicated 1n igs. 1, 2 and 3, the logs being held in place by stakes C arrangedon one side of the 4 car body and stakes C located on the opposite side of the car body, the stakes C errgaging-at their lower ends pockets D, while the lower ends of the stakes C engage the lan view of the same on the line position.

The locking arm J is pivotally connected with one end of a linkli extending transversely and terminating at its other end in a loop L adapted to lit onto a block N secured to the top of the ear body A to one lside ofthe cross beam A2. A- turn button N is mounted on the top of the block N to hold the loop L normally locked in position on the block N. lVhen it is desired to release a stake C, the turn button N is given a quarter turn'to unlock the loop L which is now lifted oft' the block N, and then'the operator pushes on the 'link L with a View to swing the locking arm J outward and d ownward to release the hasp l, which latter now can readily dis'engage the keeper I to permitV the member D-lto swing' into an open position, thus allowing the stake C to drop andreleasethe logsvB (seev Figs. 1 and-3 l Oppositely disposed stakesCand CA are connected with each other acrossthe top of the uppermost logs `B bya chain O, and a second chain P connects the said stakes C and C with the other a distance below .the upper chain- O, as plainly indicated in Figs.
1, 2 and 3. The upper chain O is prefer-v ably permanent-ly connected with a clevis O held on the upper end of the stake C. while `the, chain P is removably connected with the stake C by the use of a locking hook Q engaging one of the links ofthe chain P after the same has been passed through an opening in the stake, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 2
and 9. When it is desired to unload the logs B the hook Q is disengaged from the chain P, and then the front member- D ot the pocket D is unlocked to allow the said front member to swing into an open position, as previously explained, thus releasing the stakes C and permitting the logs to be discharged sidewise from the car body.
A, as indicated to the right in Fig. 1 and in Fig. 3. Hooks Q, similar to the ones mentioned, may be used for fastening the ends of the chains O and P on the stakes C' after t-he said chains are passed through the openings in the stakes C.

The stakes `C land C can now he swung iu a transverse. direction onto the top of the ear body A owing to the pivotal connection of the stake pockets D- and E with the car beams A by the use of the pivots F and F When t-he shoes and their stakes are in folded position the ear can be readily run through a log loader without first requiring removal of the stakes from the pockets as now practiced.
l'laving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A log-carrying car, comprising a car body, provided with sills and transverse beams 'for the logs to rest on and projecting beyond the sides of the car body, stake pockets pivoted on one side of the projecting end of the `said beams, and stakes held in the said pockets and extending below the same to rest against the outer face of the sill.
2. A log-carrying car, comprising a car body, provided with sills and transverse beams for the logs to rest on and projecting beyond the sides of the car body, stake pockets pivoted on one side of a projecting end of the said beams and provided with eyes, hooks pivoted on the beams and adapted to engage the said eyes, and stakes held in the said pockets and extending below the same to abutagainst the outer face of the sill. 4 3. Aplog-carrying car, comprising a. ear body,v` providedwith sills and transverse beams 4for the logs to rest on and projecting beyond the sides of the car body, stake pockets piyoted on one side of a projecting end of the said beams and provided with eyes and retaining hooks, hooks on the said beams engaging the said eyes, retaining plates on the beams and engaged by' the said retaining hooks, and stakes held in the said pockets and extending below the same to abut against the outer face of the sill.
4. A log-carrying car, comprising afcar body provided with sills and transverse beams for the-logs'to rest on and projecting beyond thesides of the car body, stake pockets pivoted on one side of a projecting end of the said beams, and stakes held in the said pockets and extending below the same to rest against the outer face of the sill, each stake having a stop adapted to rest on the top' of the pocket to limit the downward movementl ofthe stake. 5.'
