ELECTRIC-LAMP BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE STRAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gary, in the county of Norman, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Lamp Brackets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to electric lamp brackets and particularly to that type adapted to support lamps provided with a delicate filament.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a bracket which may be easily applied to a supporting part and which will effectually protect the lamp and the various connections between same and the supply wire from injurious effects of the elements.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a bracket of the character named which will yieldingly support a filament lamp so that the possibility of injury to the filament as the result of jarring and vibration is obviated and the life of the lamp consequently prolonged.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a bracket for electric lamps which will be simple in construction, efficient in use, easily applied and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively small cost.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote like corresponding parts in the several views in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an electric lamp bracket constructed in accordance with the invention, same beingshown attached to a supporting pole and the casing of the bracket being in section. Fig. 2 a plan view of what is shown in Fig. 1 with the casing in section. Fig. 3, a bottom view of the bracket, Fig. 4 a detail perspective view of the bridge which sustains the yielding lamp support, and Fig. 5 a detail perspective view of the shade holder associated with the bracket.
Referring to the drawings, the bracket is shown as comprising a casing A which includes a stem portion 10 one end of which is provided with lateral flanges 11, whereby the bracket may be detachably secured to a supporting pole 1.2 through the medium of suitable lag bolts 13 passing through the flanges 11 and into the pole 12. The end of the stem 10 opposite to that which carries the flange 11 is provided with an enlarged portion 14, the top 15 of which is pyramidal in shape while the top of the stem 10 is inclined from the end thereof which carries the flanges 11 toward the enlarged portion 14, this inclined top of the stem 10 and the pyramidal top 15 of the enlarged portion 14 serving to effectually drain the bracket of water due to rainfall or other causes.
Formed in thebottom of the casing A beneath the pyramidal top 15 is an opening 16. Supported within and upon the bottom of the casing A and extending across the opening 16 is a U-shaped bridge member 17 which is provided with a central aperture 18 for a purpose that will presently appear. The bridge 17 has the central portion thereof through which the aperture 18 extends enlarged and provided with upper and lower annular flanges 19 and 20 respectively which surround said aperture 18. Extending through this aperture 18 is a stem 21 which carries at its lower end an electric lamp socket 22 extending through the opening 16. The free end of the stem 21 has threaded thereon a nut 23 which looks a threaded washer 24 on said stem. Also mounted on the stem 21 is a washer 25 which rests against the top of the electric lamp socket 22.
Surrounding the stem 21 and having one end bearing against the washer 25 and its other end bearing against the lower side of the bridge 17 within the flange 20 is a spring 26. Another spring 27 surrounds the stem 21 and has one end bearing against the upper side of the bridge 17 and its other end bearing against the washer 24:.
The electric lamp socket 22 is of the usual construction, same being provided with a threaded recess for the reception of the lamp 28.
The bottom of the casing A is provided adjacent the flanges 11 with tubular extensions 29 and 30 which communicate with the interior of the casing A and have their bores respectively lined with insulating material 31 and 32. These tubular extensions 29 and 30 constitute passages whereby the supplyv wires are directed into the casing A. After this is done they are suitably connected with the electric lamp socket 22 in the usual and well known manner.
From the construction so far described it will be apparent that the electric lamp socket 22 is yieldingly supported by the springs 26 and 27 so that jar and vibration communicated from the absorbed and the delicate filament of the lamp 28 fully protected from damage. It will also be apparent that the casingv A serves to eifectually protect the delicate con nections between the lamp 28 and the supply wires from the injurious eflects 0f the elements.
Attached to the outer face of the bottom of the casing A and surrounding the opening 16 is a shade or globe holder. This holder comprises a pair of opposed arcuate members 33 and 34 which have their free ends provided respectively with the flanges 35 and 36. These flanges abut each other when the members 33 and 34 are in assembled relation and are provided respectively with registering bolt openings 37 and 38 for the reception of bolts 39 whereby the members 33 and 34 may be detachably secured together. Each of the members 33 and 34 is provided intermediately with ears 39 and 40 respectively and these latter are provided with openings 41 and 42 respectively through which extend thumb screws 43 which serve to secure the members 33 and 34 to the bottom of the casing A. pole 12 will be effectually engage the supporting flange of a shade or globe of the type usually employed to surround filament lamps. Also secured to the outer face of the bottom of the casing A and surrounding the opening 16 within the members 33 and 34 is a washer 46 constructed of felt or rubber and adapted to engage the free end of a lamp shade or globe as same is forced upwardly by the contraction of the members 33 and 34 through the medium of the manipulation of the bolts 39. The engagement of the free edge of the lamp shade or globe with the washer 46 serves to efi'ect a sealed joint and exclude the entrance of all foreign matter into the globe or upon the connections between the lamp and the supply wires which are disposed within the casing.
What is claimed is:
An electric light bracket comprising a casing having one end provided with means for attachment to a fixed part and having an opening in its bottom at the other end there of, a supporting bridge mounted in said casing and extending across said opening and provided with a central aperture, an electric lamp socket extending through said opening in the casing and provided with a longitudinally extending stem which projects through the opening in the supporting bridge, a nut threaded on the free end of said stem, a spring encircling said stem and bearing against the upper side of said bridge and against the nut on the free end of said stem and a second spring encircling said stem and bearing against the lower side of said bridge and against said socket.
