PHILIP B. HARRISON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB TO CHICAGO RAILWAY EQUIP- MEN! COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE BRAKE-HEAD.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP B. HARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Brake-Heads, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view partly in section of my improved'adjustable brake head. ,Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detailed view of a modified form.
This invention-relates to a new and useful improvement in adjustable brake heads, the object being to construct a brake head of the character described which is sim 1e and cheap and one which is made up 0 a comparatively few number of parts.
. In the drawings: 1 indicates the brake head, the rear wall of which is provided with a circumferential slot inwhich is arranged a strap 2, said strap having inwardly extending serrated projections 3 for engaging the sleeve 4 of the brake beam. The flanges of the brake head between which the ends of the strap 2 extend, as well as' the ends of the straps, are provided with alining openings for receiving the wedge keys 5.
In assembling the parts, the brake head is placed in position and the strap arranged so as to receive the keys which are driven through the openings drawing the strap tightly against the sleeve 4 and locking the brake head in adjusted position.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of my invention in which the strap is inte grally connected at one end to the brake head, the opposite end being provided with an opening registering with openings in the solid portion of the head, whereby the wedge key 5"'may be driven into position to draw the tongue or strap against the sleeve.
What I claim is:
1. The combination of a brake head having a circumferential opening in onewall thereof, a strap spanning said opening and means in the form of a wedge key cooperating with the brake head and the end of said strap for clamping the head in position.
2. The combination of a brake head, a portion of whose rear wall is movable with respect to the remaining portions of said rear wall, and means, in the form of a wedge key, cooperating with the brake head and one end of said movable wall for forcing the latter inwardly against the part of the brake beam on which the head is mounted.
3. The combination of a brake head having a slot in one wall, a strap located in and spanning said slot, and means cooperating with both ends of the strap for moving the same with respect to the brake head.
4. The combination of a brake head having a slot in one Wall, a strap s anning said slot, and means in the form 0 wedge keys cooperating with both ends of the strap for moving the same with respect to the brake head.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 17 day of November, 1911.
PHILIP B. HARRISON.
