CLYDE o. BALSTON', OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ANTHONY BARKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DUMB-BELL AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE G. BALSTON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Dumb-Bells and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dumb-bells, bar-bells, and the like, and has for its object to enable the ready altering of the weight of the device, and to enable the ready insertion into the bell of water, shot, or the like, as desired.
My invention comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 is a partly sectional side view of a dumb-bell or bar-bell embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2, 2, in Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 indicates a hollow hell or member shown provided with a flattened end 1, whereby it may readily stand to be charged. The hollow member 1 is provided with a threaded opening 2, and a funnellike mouth 3 made conical on its inner surface 3*. Member 1 is also provided with a seat 4 adjacent the inner portion of surface 3 to receive a packing or gasket 5. The bar 6 is provided with external threads 7 adapted to engage threads 2, and said bar is also provided with a head 8 having a lower cone-like surface 9 to fit against the cone-like surface 3. Head 8 is shown provided with a threaded bore receiving the threads 7 of bar 6 so that said head may be screwed tight to the shoulder on bar 6 at 10. Head 8 has an end seat 11 to engage and press against gasket 5 to make a tight joint for the bell. At 12 is a screw passing through bores in bar 6 and head 8 and threaded in a portion of such bores so as to bear forcibly against the mouth 3 to retain bar 6 firmly set in position in connection with bell 1. Head 8 may be provided with a nut-like portion 8 to permit ready connection and disconnection of the parts.
In using the device screw 12 may be released from funnel-mouth 3, head 8 and bar 6 may then be unscrewed, and bell 1 may be charged with water, shot, or the like, to provide the desired weight, and then bar 6 and head 8 will be screwed back into hell 1, so that head 8 will bear firmly against packing or gasket 5 to prevent leakage, and then screw 12 will be screwed firmly against funnel 3 to prevent disconnection of the parts.
The screw 12 may be screwed partly out or rcarwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and will then serve as a handle to aid in rotating bar 6 and head 8 for applyitppgl them to or removing them from the WVhile I have shown two bells 1 and a single bar 6, which may be of any suitable length, it will be understood that the parts may be adapted for use as a dumb bell or bar-bell having double bells, or as a dumbbell or club having a single bell.
Having now described my invention what I claim is 1. The combination of a hollow bell having a funel-like mouth, with a bar provided with an enlarged head having a cone-like surface fitting said mouth, and means for retaining said bar in position.
2. The combination of a hollow bell having an opening provided with threads and having a funnel-like mouth exterior to said threads, with a bar having threads fitting the first named threads, and having an enlarged head having a cone-like surface fitting said mouth, and means to retain said bar in set position.
3. The combination of a hollow bell provided with a funnel-like mouth and a seat,
a gasket for said seat, and a bar passing vided With a mouth, a bar, means for securof New York and State of New York, this ing said bar to said bell through said mouth, 6th day of March, A. D. 1911. said bar having a head fitting said mouth,
and a screw passing through said bar and CLYDE BALSTON' mouth and bearing against said mouth to Witnesses: retain the bar from rotation therein. CHAS. A. BRODEN,
Signed at New York city in the county '1". F. BOURNE.
