Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. Ci-IUBBUGK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Handle Grip Control for Motor- Cycles or the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to means in association with the handle-bars of motor-cycles, or the like, for controlling the engine throttles thereof; and it has for its object the provision of simple and improved means of this class, which is cheap of construction, easy and efficient inv its operation, and which overcomes difficulties incident to other forms of devices of this class.
The invention is fully described in the following specification and a preferred embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a motorcycle handle bar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central longitudinal section of an end portion of such handle bar. Fig. 3 is a similar section with parts shown in full. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line a: in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of the fixed control sleeve.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the hollow handle bar of a motor-cycle, or the like, which is carried by a hollow steering post or shaft 2, the hollows of the post and handle bar being in communication. Upon the end of the handle bar is rotatably mounted a hand-grip sleeve 3, which abuts at its inner end against a collar 4 secured to the handle bar, and has a plug key 5 secured within its outer end by one or more screws 6 or in any other suitable manner, and abutting against the associated end of the handle bar. Mounted wit-hin the handle bar adjacent to the inner end of the hand-grip 3 is an inner stationary sleeve, 7, which is secured against movement within the handle bar by a screw 8 or in any other suitable manner. This control sleeve is provided duced, as at 13, to work within the portion 9 of the bore of the sleeve 7. To prevent rotary movements of the nut 12 within the handle bar, the reduced portion 13 thereof is provided with ribs or feathers 14 for working in registering slots 15 provided in the outer end portion of the sleeve 7. The inner end of the reduced portion 13 of the controlnut is provided with a stem 16 which is adapted to project within the portion 10 of the bore of the sleeve 7, and is itself provided in its free end with a bore or socket 17 for the insertion of an end o f the throttle control-wire 18, which wire is secured therein by soldering or in any other suit-able manner.
Fixed to the plug or key 5 and projecting inwardly therefrom and through the nut 12 the control-screw 19 of my device, which,
upon a turning of the hand-grip sleeve 3, is adapted to effect a longitudinal movement of the nut 12 and att-ached parts within the handle bar. The. plug 5 is shown as having a rib 20 on its inner side, which fits wit-hin a registering recess in the outer end of the screw 19, and the screw and plug are rigidly secured together by a screw 21. Balls 22 are shown as being mounted within a recess 23 in the outer end portion of the screw 19 to provide an anti-friction bearing for the screw within the handle bar.
24 designates a coiled wire sheathing or protecting case for the control wire 18, which sheathing has an end fitted within the reduced portion 11 of the stationary sleeve bore and is adapted to loosely receive the co-ntrol-wire 1S to prevent a buckling thereof when the nut 12 is moved inwardly. The control nut 12 is shown as being of hollow construction and filled with Babbitt or other suitable metal 25 to coact with the screw 19, and the reduced portion 13 of the nut is provided with a bore 26 in register with the bore of the nut to permit a projection of the screw 19 therein as the nut moves longitudinally thereof.
It is apparent with this construction of throttle control that a turning of the handgrip sleeve 3 in one direction will rotate the screw 19 and impart an outward movement to the nut 12 and attached control wire 18, whereas a turning of the sleeve 3 in the opposite direction will rotate the screw 19 to impart an inward movement to the nut 12 to slacken the attached control wire 18 or move it inwardly.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or 'arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. The combination with the hollow handle bar of a motor-cycle, of a grip-sleeve rotatably mounted on an end` of such bar, a screw attached to said sleeve and disposed within the handle bar, a nut mounted for sliding movements within the handle bar and receiving such screw, a. throttle wire attached to such nut, and means preventing rotary but permitting longitudinal movements of the nut within the handle bar.
2. The combination with the handle bar of a motor-cycle, or the like, of a gripsleeve rotatably mounted on an end thereof, a screw projecting within such end of the handle bar and fixed at its outer end to the outer end of said sleeve, a sleeve fixed within the handle bar, a nut receiving said screw and mounted for longitudinal movements within the handle bar, said nut having portions working within said fixed sleeve and coperating therewith to prevent rotation of the nut, and a throttle control wire attached' to the free end of the portion of the nut which projects within said fixed sleeve.

The combination with the hollow handle bar of a motor-cycle, or the like, of a handle-grip sleeve rotatably mounted on an end thereof, a plug fixed within the outer end of said sleeve and abutting against the handle bar end, a screw fixed to and projecting from said plug within the handle bar, a nut for said screw capable of movements longitudinally of the handle bar, said nut being hollow and having a Babbitt metal filling for coacting with the screw, a stationary sleeve within the handle bar having the outer end of its bore enlarged with the wall thereof longitudinally slotted and having its opposite end reduced to a greater' extent than its intermediate portion, an extension on the nut adapted to work within the enlarged end of the sleeve bore and having means coperating with said slot to prevent rotary movements of the nut, a stem projecting from the free end of said nut extension and working within the intermediate reduced portion of the stationary sleeve, a throttle wire fixed to the free end of said stemand a coiled wire sheathing incasing the throttle wire and having the end thereof adjacent to said fixed sleeve secured within the reduced en d of its bore, substantially as described.
