Description

H. W. GADWELL. CONTAINER AND DBOPPEB.
APPLIOATION FILED MAY 21, 1909.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY W. CADWELL, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO FREDERICK STEARNS & COMPANY, 013 DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
CONTAINER AND DROPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
Application filed May 21, 1909. Serial No. 497,421.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY WV. CADWELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers and Droppers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a container and dropper, and consists in such a device comprising a container body with a nipple at one end and. a filling aperture at the other, with a flexible closure therefor of such construction that it may be flexed for the purpose of forcing the drops from the container body through the nipple, as desired, and so that it may be removed for filling or re-filling purposes; all as more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing I have shown my invention in vertical and longitudinal section.
The preferred way of manufacturing my device is from a cylindrical tube of glass, which may be shaped by heating and drawing in the well-known manner to form the main body portion A and the tapering nipple B. At the end opposite the nipple I form a shoulder C, preferably at the inner end of the flaring portion D, and against this shoulder may be inserted a closure E of rubber, or suitable material. For the nipple B I provide any suitable closure, such as the cap F-which may be an ordinary rubber cap used for such tapering nipples at the present time.
The receptacle is filled more or less with a liquid, this filling being effected by removing the closure E and then replacing it; and if it is desired to discharge drops of the contained liquid through the nipple, the cap F is removed and the operator presses down the flexible closure E, depressing the central portion thereof sufliciently to eject the desired number of drops.
This construction is especially desirable as compared with the devices where a separate dropper is employed, for the reason that once the material is put in the container, it remains uncontaminated by outside influences, as would not be the case if another dropper were inserted within it, such dropper being detached for each operation;
and my device is particularly convenient for use in filling prescriptions for eye-troubles, as the receptacle itself not only Will contain the prescription but also act as the drop perand an exceptionally accurate and easily operated one also. It will also be found valuable as a container for medicines which are to be dosed by means of drops, such as nux vomica, Fowlers solution, etc.
If it is desired to re-fill the container at any time, a knife or other sharp instrument, can be inserted beside the closure E and the same readily removed, the container refilled, and the closure replaced for another operation.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a container for liquids, the combination of a single piece body having a dropper nipple at one end forming an integral extension thereof, the other end being open, the body portion adjacent the open end being constructed to form an annular shoulder projecting within the container, and a portion of the body beyond said shoulder being flared outwardly, and a comparatively thick single piece flexible, outwardlybowed compressible stopper member detachably fitting within the open end and seated upon the annular shoulder, said member forming a compressible stopper or cork for the container and a drop actuating means.
2. In a container for liquids, the combination of a single piece body having a dropper nipple at one end forming an integral extension thereof, the other end being open, the body portion adjacent the open end being constructed to form an annular shoulder projecting within the container, and the open end of the body beyond said shoulder being extended to constitute a stopper securing and holding portion, and a comparatively thick single piece flexible outwardly bowed compressible stopper member detachably fitting within the extended open end of the body and seated upon the annular shoulder, said member forming a stopper or cork for the container and a drop actuating means.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY W. CADWELL.
