The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all 'whom it may conce/m Be it known that I, Anous MCALPIN, of Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented a new and nsefnlilmprovement inBrick and other Molds, ef which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanylfi'ng1 drawing forming part of this specication, and in w 1c Figure 1 represents a plan of a mold constructed'in in accordance with my improvement;

The object of this invention, as applied to the production of brick, is to facilitate the removal of the brick from the mold without injuring or imparing the shape of the brick; 4and The invention consists in a peculiar construction of a mold, having movable-sides and ends to allow of the separation of the mold from the brick, substantially as hereinafter described;

Refenjing to the accompanying drawing- A A represent the movable sides and B B the movable ends of the mold These sides and ends are made perpendicular and flat on their inner sides, and meet at right angles to constitute the mold proper. On the outer surfaces said sidesand ends are beveled, so as to be thicker at their bottoms than at their tops, as more clearly seen in fig. 3. Said sides and ends are made movable or detached from each other, to allow of their separation from the brick by'enlarging the area of the mold. When shut in or closed to make brick, they come in contact, or thereabouts.

Each side A and end B is provided down its extcrior surface with dovetailed slides or projections, c, made to t dovetailed grooves, d, formed on the interior of a stiff band or case, C, which is made to t accurately the mold proper, as formed by the sides A A and ends B B.

This band or case C, that may be said to form part of the improved or complete mold, is of less height or depth'than the mold proper, as seen in gs. 2 and 3, and is so itted around the latter as that, when the ,mold proper is closed, said band Vrests with` its lower edge flush, or thereabouts, with the lower edge of the mold proper. l

Springs, e, may be arranged between the mold and its band to produce a friction between the two, which will prevent any accidental slip of the one over, through,

or mold proper, the area of the mold will be increased and its sides and ends withdrawn squarely and evenly from each other and from 'the brick which has been molded by them, thus leaving the brick free to be removed. `The distances which the sides and ends ofthe molds are thus drawn from the brick depend upon the angle of the inclined planes of the side or sides and ends and band.

This improved mold may be worked either by handv or bymachinery. When operated by hand the bandA C should be furnished with convenient handles, and when the mold is lled with the pressed clay it is inverted and the sliding band C pressed down even with the top of the mold proper, and, the brick being liberated, themold is withdrawn.

When operated by machinery, the band O is moved vertically up and down by means of machinery without inverting the mold.

Boththe mold proper and its outer band or case may bc made of any suitable material or materials, and of any desired size or shape; also, other means may be employedthan those described for expanding the mold.
