Description
H. J. MAYER. TAILORS CHALK SHARPENER, REOEPTAOLE, AND PAPER WEIGHT. APPLICATION FILED PEB.13, 1911.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HENRY J. MAYER, or COLUMBUS, OHIO.
TAILORS CHALK SHARPENIIR, RECEPTACLE, AND PAPER-WEIGHT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. MAYER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tailors Chalk Sharpeners, Receptacles, and Paper-Eights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tailors chalk sharpener, receptacle and paper weight, and consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings :F igure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, illustrating the manner in which the chalk is sharpened. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section, taken on the plane indicated by the dotted lines 33 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section, taken on the line 4.i of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the chalk sharpening knives.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention, the device comprises an approximately rectangular box or receptacle 1, having the flat bottom 1 the convex rearwardly curved front wall 2 and the rearwardly and down wardly sloped side walls 8.
The box or receptacle is constructed of heavy metal to facilitate its use as a paper weight, and is provided at the front with a pair of transversely disposed alined shoulders 4 on which are adjustably mounted the chalk sharpening knives 5, being secured in place and held in an adjusted posit-ion by the screws 6, the stems or shanks of which pass through longitudinal elongated slots 7 in the shoulders and screw through the shanks or body portions 8 of the chalk sharpening knives.
From the foregoing, it is obvious that the cutting edges of the knives may be brought closer together or moved farther apart to regulate the thickness of the marking edge of the chalk by adjusting the screws 6 in the slots.
The cutting knives are provided with the beveled faces 9, as shown, leaving the scrap- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing edges 10,between which and the opening a formed in the front wall of the box the chalk is drawn by the cutter or operator to form the marking edge 11 on the chalk 12.
It will be observed, by reference to Fig. 2, that the knives are arranged at a slight inclination which facilitates the process of shaving the edge of the chalk.
The box is used as a receptacle for the pieces of chalk and also as a receptacle for the shavings left in forming the marking edges on the chalk.
By means of the knives, the chalk is shaved to a deep uniform edge of the same thickness back to the shoulder, thus saving the chalk and making it unnecessary to sharpen the same as often as were an ordinary pocket knife used.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is thought that the construction and advantages of this invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be re sorted to without departing from the principles or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the class described comprising a box or receptacle having a rearwardly curved front wall with a central vertical opening, a pair of transversely alined shoulders, provided with longitudinal elongated slots, at the front of the box, a pair of chalk sharpening knives adjustably mounted on said shoulders, said knives having beveled inner portions, leaving scraping edges, between which the chalk is drawn to form the marking edge, and screws passing through the slots and screwing into the knives for adjusting the latter.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY J. MAYER.
Witnesses F. M. Simon, B. F. GURRAN.
