To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN D. MAsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Safety-Platform, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to safety platforms for window cleaning purposes. Its object is to provide an inexpensive, etficient and safe means for securing access to the outside of an upper window of a building and for supporting a person in safety while engaged at work upon the outside of such window, and also to provide means for readily attaching and detaching, and for folding up the apparatus for its convenient useand storage.
It consists mainly of a suitable frame, made collapsible, and adapted to hang against the outer wall of a building, opposite a window thereof, and to be there supported by a removable cross bar which on gages the inner window casing, said frame inclosing a hinged platform at its bottom, and guarded by wire netting or the like to prevent a person from falling off the platform.
It further consists of the novel means employed for strengthening and securing the mechanism, folding it up, and the novel combination of elements as hereinafter more fully set forth and stated in the claims.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention as suspended from a window, parts of the inclosing netting being cut away from the frame for better illustration. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section of Fig. 1 on the line X-X.
In the drawings A A are the outer posts or standards of the frame.
A C are horizontal cross bars which serve to unite the standards at top and bottom, the latter also is the outer support for the platform P which is hinged thereto so as to fold upwardly against said standards.
H H are end bars by means of which the platform is hinged to the bar C preferably by the loops 0 c. The end bars extend to the outer edge of the window sill I and are there bent inwardly to rest against said sill, as at R. The inner edge of the platform may also engage said sill as an abutment and be solidly attached to said extension B. To better secure the platform in this position, as well as to give rigidity to the lower part of the frame, I bend the bars R upwardly at or near the center of the sill and extend them across the same as shown, p p, and secure them under the cross bar D, which is bent or notched as at o for this purpose, by their hooked ends 2, t.
D is a cross bar which rests against the inner casing j of the window, and is held in position by the weight of the frame which is suspended thereon. B B are crooked suspension rods which are detachably con nected with said cross bar D by means of hooked ends .7) b and with the upper ends of said standards by means of hooks a a which pivotally engage sockets therein. E E are brace bars secured to the outer corners of the frame, and to said suspension bars B to which they extend diagonally at e and connect by a notch or bend c therein to prevent slipping in either direction. By this junction it is apparent a truss is formed at each end of the frame whereby the outer edge of the platform P is supported while the inner edge thereof bears against said sill and said suspension rods engage said cross.

For protection, the sides and back of the frame are covered with a wire netting n or other suitable inclosure. The sides and back of the frame being pivotally joined together as aforesaid, it is apparent the parts may be readily folded inwardly against the standards when removal is desired.
Additional means of securing said platform are provided by hinging the bars F F to the cross bar C, and extending the said bars diagonally so as to make contact with the wall of the building below the said frame. G G are lift rods which connect with said diagonal bars near their lower ends respectively, and extend upwardly terminating with a handle 9 and are detachably secured to the side of the platform P by a pin it which is adapted to engage any one of a series of pin holes 2' i in said lift rods. By these means an additional triangular brace is provided, and is adjustable to the building by the action of said lift rods. This lower triangular frame is not absolutely essential to my invention, but is provided as additional means of support and adjustment, and as a modification. The said bars F and G being pivotally connected are readily drawn up alongside of the standards when the parts are folded up as aforesaid. It is essential that the inner edge of the platform should be both laterally and vertically supported by the window sill, and that the supporting cross bar D should be adjusted to receive the suspension rods B B as aforesaid, and that the brace bars E E should be of a proper length to span the diagonal frame at each end, and that the several members be constructed with the mechanical accuracy and strength to hold the frame in proper shape and position as aforesaid.
By the means aforesaid I provide a strong, rigid frame and platform whereon a workman may labor in safety, and which may be easily adjusted in position,or collapsed and shifted from place to place, and easily and inexpensively constructed.
I do not limit myself to the particular shape of the structure, or of any of its members, but the same may be modified within the spirit and the object of my invention as above set forth.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A safety suspension plat-form, comprising a pair of standards united at top and bottom by cross bars as a rectangular frame, a platform secured to the base of said frame, extending therefrom horizontally, and adapted to rest normally against the outside of a window frame or sill, a removable cross bar adapted to rest horizontally against the inner casing of said window frame above the sill thereof, a pair of sus pension rods, each connected to said cross bar and to the top of an adjacent standard, a pair of brace bars, each connected with the base of said rectangular frame opposite a standard and diagonally therefrom to the adjacent suspension rod, and means for securing the inner edge of said platform in position against said window sill or frame, substantially as set forth and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a window frame, of a platform adapted .to rest against the outside of said window frame, and to extend horizontally therefrom to the base of a rectangular frame comprising a pair of vertical standards united by cross bars at top and bottom, a removable cross bar adapted to rest against the inner casing of said windowframe above the sill thereof, a pair of suspension rods connected to said cross bar and to the tops of said standards respectively, a pair of brace bars diagonally uniting the base of said rectangular frame and said suspension bars respectively at opposite ends of said platform, and means for securing the inner edge of said platform against said window frame, substantially as set forth and for the purpose specified.
3. In a safety platform, the combination with a window frame, of a rectangular frame suspended therefrom comprising a pair ofvertical standards united by cross bars and having top sockets, a cross bar eX- tending horizontally across the inner surface of said window frame above the sill thereof, a platform at the bottom of said window frame, abutting thereon, and extending horizontally to the base of said rectangular frame and hinged thereto, a suspension rod opposite each end of said platform having its outer end hooked downwardly to pivotally engage the standard adjacent thereto by its socket, and its inner end detachably secured to said cross bar, a diagonal cross bar opposite each end of said platform, its lower end hinged at the base of said rectangular frame, and its upper end adapted to engage the suspension rod adjacent thereto, and means for detachably securing the inner side of said platform against said window frame, substantially as set forth and for the purpose specifieda 4. The combination with a window frame, a rectangular frame suspended therefrom, a horizontal platform abutting against said window frame, and hinged to said rectangular frame, a horizontal cross bar extending across said window frame, a suspension rod detachably secured to said cross bar at each end, and pivotally engaging the upper corners respectively of said rectangular frame, a diagonal cross bar at each end pivotally engaging the lower corners respectively of said rectangular-frame, and secured intermediately to the adjacent suspension rod aforesaid, and means, includ ing bars connected with said platform and with said cross bar, to secure said platform against said window frame, substantially as set forth.
