Be it known; I, SAMUEL F. HOLMES, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Padlocks, of which the following is a specifi-A cation.
This invention relates to improvements in locks, and particularly to portable devices or locks of the padlock type, and it is theY object of the invention to provide a permutation lock well guarded against easy ick ing, which will not require the use o the tendency of the spring being to keep the bolt key.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a padlock with a combination mechs anisin for permitting of the unlocking or locking of the device.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the improved permutation padlock. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional v,i ew through the same. Fig. 3 is a central vi'ew taken longitudinally of the device and at right angles to the section of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the tumblers of the lock. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view through a portion of the lookin casin showing the outer actuating tumb er of t e combination and the exterior knob connected therewith for turn ing it. Fig. 6 is a detail view partiallyI in section and artially in side elevation of the two part loc ing bolt employed in connection with the combination mechanism.
The details of the invention will now be more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- 1 indicates a lock casing, 2. a shackle piv-` oted therein as at 3, and 4 a bolt for securing the shackle in looked position. The casing and shackle may be of any desired or ordinary type suitable for padlocks or similar portable locks, and the said shackle is pro vided at its free end with u. notch 5 adapted to be engaged by a lip or projection 'i formed upon the bolt l. The end ot the shackle is` adapted to extend intr a slot T. formed in the casing l, its extremity being provided with a curved portion 5i, adapted to slide or force by the lip (i of the bolt.

free end of the'lever Y10 is provided -with a laterally lextending flange 12, which restsl upon and engages the tumblers of the oombination portion of the lock.
A spring 13, preferably fulcriuned upon the pivot pin 9, bears at one end against the lipv 6 l,of the bolt 4 and at its other end against the flange 12 of the lever 10, the

The said spring, however, will yield sufficiently to permit the holt 4 to be forcedbackwardly .by the end of the shackle 2 when the said shackle is to be locked in position. The said spring of course will cause the lip 6 to antoinatically engage' the not/ch 5 of the shackle when the said shackle is closed.V The bolt mechanism is also preferably provided with a second spring 14 whicu is generally fulcrumed upon the pin Q and has one end extending into a recess 15 formed in the adjacent wall of the Casing 1. The other end of said sprin r bears upon the edge of the flange l2 upon -tie lever 10. The said Springinsures the riding of the said flange 12 upon the edges of lock tumblers and when the de pression in the tumblers permit the said flange 12 to be depressed, the said spring will force the lever 10 downwardly so as to withdraw the bolt 4 from its engagement with the shackle 2.
The Bange v12 is adapted to cooperate with a number of disks or combination tumlilers as 16,17 and 18. The disks 16,17and 18 are preferably made similar to those of the ordinary permutation lock, and the outer disk near the face of the. lock as 1, carried by a shaft 19 ivhirli projects through the troni, of the lock und has rigidly secured thereto au oijiernting knol 20. The said knob i5() is provided with a tlange 2l having an indicator mark or notch formed thereon.

lt will be apparent 'that the' project-ions may be arranged differenti' upon the disks to make different combinatlonsfor diit'erent locks, or the disks may be altered in their arrangements in the sartie lock so that the co nbination may be changed.
