Description
@met @twine HORACE EVERETT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 101,847, ldated April 12', 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEET-METAL CANS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making paift of the same I, HORACE EVERETT, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia', Staterof Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Sheet-Metal Cans or Cases, of which the following is a specification.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view oi' a portion of the body of a sheet-metal can or case, showing the ypreparatory step taken in forming the joint.
' Figure 2, a view of the joint complete. General Description.
1n fig. l, A represents asti-ip of sheet metal, bent to a cylindrical shape so as to form the body of the can `or case, the opposite ends, a anda', of the strip being folded, and the fold of one fitting within the fold of the lother, so as to form the usual lapped joint.
If solder be used to render this joint permanent, the bottom or head of the case could be applied by the aid of machinery wit-hout any diiiiculty, and there would be no need of my invention, but numbers of cans 0l cases, such, for instance, as those for containing causl tic alkali, are made byV preference the joint.
In applying the heads or bottoms by machinery to bodies having plain uusoldered lapped joints, as shown in iig. 1, many of the cans are spoiled, owing to the tendency ot' the ends ofthe strip A, ot' which the body is composed, to slip in thel direction pointed out by the arrows.
In order to prevent this, Ilform in the body of the can, adjacent to the lap joint, a crease, b, which forms an internal rib for preventing the displacement of the joint during the application of thc bottom or head of' the can to the body.
It is not necessary that the crease shall extend from end to end of the body, as two or more indentations only may be made adjacent to the joint.
without soldering C' Zaini..
The crease or indentation d, made in the body oi' thc can, in the position described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to 'this specification in the presence oi' two subscribing
