IMPROVBMENT IN RAILROAD-TANK VALVES.
The Schedule referred to ln these' Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, MARSHALL Oowme, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and nsefullmprovements in Valves for I tailroad Tanks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specitication, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
Theobject of my invention is to provide a valve for railroad tanks, which shall be very durable, as well as simple and cheap in its construction, and elective in operation.
lhe nature of my invention consists in constructing the valve-*seat of gun met-al, or other non-corroding metal, thereby avoiding destruction by oxidation,
' and in facing the valve with leather where it comes in i cout-act with the valve-seat, by which means the valve is made perfectly tight, so that no leakage can occur, and also in providing a universal joint, to which the delivery spout is attached, so that by the combination of these improvements a cheap and durable valve is obtained, which is simple in its construction, and very efficient in its operation and not liable to get out of repair,

Letters of like name and kind indicate like parts in each of the figures.
A represents the body of the valve, which may be of ordinary construction, and secured within the tank` by any suitable means.
B is the valve, which may be made of gun metal or other suitable material, and is provided with a facing of leather, C, where it comes in contact with the valveseat Ti, by which means it is made to lit perfectly tight, thus eliectually preventing leakage when the valve is closed, and at the saine time securing great durability.
The seat D is made of gun metal, or other non-corroding metal, thereby being capable of retaining its proper form for an indefinite length of time, and obviating a diliicnlty which has` hithertobeen encountered by the'rusting or oxidation of the seat.
E is a swivel hinge r universal joint,'to .which the sheet-iron delivery spout is attached, by means of' which the said vspout can be swung around to any desired angle, either horizontally or vertically, when not in use.

I may mention that when a sh eet-iron delivery spout is not used, a rubber or leather hose may be attached to the end of the valve.
The advantages of -my invention are evident, for the reason that, the valve-seat being made of a noncorroding metal, no oxidation of the said seat can occur to produce leaking; also that, the valve being faced withleather where it comes in contactwith the seat, causes it to t thereon perfectly tight; and likewise that the swivel hinge or universal joint, to which is att-ached the delivery spout, enables the said spout to be swung around at any desired angle, either horizontally or vertically.

The valve B, provided with the leather facing C and gun-metal valve -seat D, in combination with the swivel hinge E and body A of the valve, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
