Description

JOHN H. O-HEEVER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 101,823, dated April 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN INDIA-RUBBER CARPETING AND EMBOSSED MAT'I'ING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern 7 Be it known that 1, JOHN H. Cl-IEEYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vulcanized India-Rubber Carpeting and Embossed Mat-ting, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to carpeting or embossed inatting, composed of a layer of India rubber and a layer of cloth, the India rubber being placed on the cloth in a green or plastic state, and, while in such state, run between rollers, one of which, that is to say, the
' one in contact with the rubber, is engnved with the design which it is desired to reproduce in relief upon the rubber.
The rubber, thus combined with 'a backing of cloth, and stamped or embossed, is then vulcanized, so as to produce an ornamented or figured sheet or strip suitable for carpeting or mat-ting.
In the manufacture of th'is article, it has been usual heretofore to employ for the cloth backing, a com paratively tine and closely-woven fabric, which is so thin as not to yield appreciably when compressed between the rollers, and, owing to thisunyielding nature of the backing, the rubber has not been' able to properly fill the figures or depressions in the die or engraved rollers, and, consequently, the embossed or raised figures have had little relief, and have. been but imperfectl y developed or produced upon the matting,
In the course of experiments which I have instituted to remedy this defect, I have found that; the diliiculty can be entirely removed by employing, in lieu of the fabric ordinarily used, a connuonly-called gnnuy or jute cloth, made of soft and thick strands of jute. The employmentof such a cloth not only gives a stronger backing for the rubber, but also, owing to the softness and thickness of the strands, ad-
mits of the fabric being compressed to the desired cstent between the rolls, so as,to allow the rubber to fill every part of the engraved poigtions ofthe embossingroll, and causing the figures to be reproduced upon tne rubber,s1u'fitce of the matting with a distinctness and boldness of relief hitherto unattainable, so that not only is the carpeting made as strong or stronger than heretofore, and with a thicker body, but the ornamental designs are clearly marked and brought out in just as full relief as the depressions in the embossingroller will admit oi'.'
The employment of the jute also enables me to manufacture. the carpeting or matting at much less expense, and to produce a cheaper and better article than has been before practicable. Again, it is more dumblothan the ordiuarythin matting-or carpeting, and is not so apt to wear at the points where the floor upon which it is laid is uneven.
In carrying out my invention, the same process of manufiicture is employed as has been in use heretofore, the only difference being that I employ the jute or gunny-cloth or canvas in lieu of the canvas or like cloth ordinarily used, so that a further description is not necessary.
Having now described my invention,
What I claim. and desire to secure by Letters ln-tent, is-
As a new mauuihcture, vulcanized 1ndia-rubbercarpeting or embossed matting, composed of vulcanized India rubber, in combination with a backing of cloth or canvas made of jute, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I. have signed my name to this specific-a tion before two 'subscribingwitnesses.
JOHN H. OHEEVER.
