SHARPENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 27, 1911.
Serial No. 651,486.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER EssnR, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Paterson, in'the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sharpening devices, and more particularly to those adapted for the sharpening of knives, the knives of butchers, chefs, etc, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device which may be readily used, and when not in use placed in a position so as not to be in the way or liable to become entangled. For this purpose, my invention consists of a sharpening device comprising a pivoted sharpener adapted to be alined with the knife sharpener, and held in alined position by a spring, and adapted to be placed in operative position by the movement of the sharpening device on its Pivot and against the action of the spring.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of my improved sharpening device in its inoperative position, Fig. 2 is a side view of my improved sharpening device in its operative position, and Fig. 3 is a vertical, transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawings and more particularly to Fig. 1, the usual sharpener 9 is provided with a handle 10 having an eyelet 11 for hanging up the sharpener, as is well lmown.
The handle is provided with a flange 12 and the sharpener is provided at itssquared lower portion 13 with a sharpening device a slight distance away from the flange 12.
The sharpening device consists of a pivoted sharpener 16 secured to the sharpener 9 by means of a pin 14 and which is provided at its upper end with a sharpener edge 17 and a shoulder 19 on a base portion 15. The other end of the sharpening device 16 is provided with an extension 23 having a button 24 and a curved part 28. Intermediate the extension 23 and the handle a spring 25 is interposed which is seated in a recess 26 of the handle 10. The base portion 15 of the sharpening device 16 is curved, as shown at 20, and is adapted to strike the upper face 21 of the flange 12 so as to prevent the movement of the sharpening device 16 after it alines itself with the sharpener 9, as shown in Fig. 1.
When it is desired to use the sharpening device, the button 24 on the extension 23 is pressed, whereby the spring 25 is compressed and the sharpening device 16 is moved out of alinement with the sharpener and caused to take the posit-ion shown in v Fig. 2. The knife to be sharpened is then inserted between the sharpening edge 17 and the edge 18 of the sharpener and thereby a good cutting edge is provided to the knife after it has been moved to and fro between the sharpener 17 and the edge 18.
I have shown one embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A sharpening device comprising a handle, a sharpening steel secured thereto and having a sharpening edge, a sharpening member pivoted to said steel above the handle and having a sharpening edge adapted to cooperate with the sharpening edge of the steel, an extension from the sharpening member extending downwardly opposite the upper end of the handle, and means for normally retaining the sharpening member in parallel alinement with said steel.
2. A sharpening device comprising a handle, a sharpening steel secured thereto and having a longitudinal sharpening edge adjacent the handle, a flange between said edge and said handle, a sharpening member pivoted to said steel above the flange and having a longitudinal sharpening edge adapted to cooperate with the sharpening edge of the steel, a projection on said member adapted to abut against said flange for arresting the movement of the memberwhen in parallel alinement with the steel, an ex- Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
