Description

Latent @wird EZRA SPRINGER., or DAVIS, ILLINOIS.
Lette/rs Patent No. 101,780, dated Apr/il 12, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making Part of the same I, EZRA SPRINGER, of Davis, iu the county of Steplienson and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Car-Movers, of which the following is a specification.
Nature and Objects of the Intention.
Description ofthe Accompanying Drawings. Figure 1 is a side elevation with the .rear framepiece removed.
Figure 2 is a top view. Figure 3 is a jside elevation of one of thel framepieces.l
Figure 4 is a front view of the catches Z and M, of iig.
. General Description.
A A are the side or frame-pieces, one. of which is shown fully at fig. 3.
BB"are toothed sectors, connected by arms BB B B, and having a common center, to which they are arranged eccentrically, and through which the axial bolt b passes, having suitable bearings in the frauiepieces A A.
-G is a cam-plate, toothed on the face C', gearing with the sectorB, and p ivoted on the bolt J, the bolt J having bearings in the slots .IJ, in the framepleces. I l
D is a bar, piroted at one end to the end of the cam-plate G, and pivoted, near its center, on the bolt H, the bolt H having bearings in the slots H H in the frame-pieces.
M is a forked catch attached to the louter end of the bar D.
R is a rod, pivoted to the upper arm of the sector B" by a stud R", and, at the other end, to the plate C by a stud, R'.
N is a cam-plate, gearing with the sector B', and having a slot S', near its forward end.
S is a bolt passing through the slot S', on which the cam-plate N isY pivoted.
P is a rod connecting the cam-plate N and sector B.
.U U is an angle-plate, pivotedat to thcv end of the cam-plate N, which projects from between the ends of the side frame-pieces.
'V is a loop encircling the angle-plate -U U and pivoted on the bolt U".
The forward end of loop V is formed into a hook, as shown, and the rear end is threaded t-o receive a set-screw, V.
vW W are plates secured to the plate U.-
Y is a bar, pivoted between the plates W W at its upper end, and carryinga catch or forked bite at its lower end.
X is a lever, secured to the sectors B B.
The operation o t' my device is as follows:
The sill, beneath one of the cars, represented in sect-ion by lines T, is caught between hook V and plate U, and, by means of the thumb-screw V', the hold is made secure. The fork Z' is made to engage with one of the rails, and the fork Mis brought down to engage with the same rail, the lever X being in the position shown in the drawings at fig. 1. Now, by drawing the lever X back in the direction of the arrow, it will be plainly seen that the cam-plate N will be projected forward and the bar D projected back, both combining to shove the car forward, then by throwing the lever X forward the'whole device will again be brought into position for a repetition of the same operation, the rods R. having, when the lever X was thrown forward, served to draw the cam-plates N and C into the position shown iu the drawing, thereby sliding and drawing forward the fork' M into anew posit-ion. rlhe same operation repeated will drive the car forward as far as may be desired. .s
By means o f the power obtained by the oamlplates C and N, and sectors B' B, and toggle-joint formed by the cam-plate C and bar. D, one man or boy may easily move or start; any ca'r, and by means of all the devices combined the machine may be almost instantly brought into position for another' shove.
C laims.
`What I claim as new is- 1. The combination and arrangement of the level' X, sectors B' cam-plates C' and N, and bar D,
with the flume-pieces A A and slots Jand S', substantially as'described and for the purpose set forth. 2. The rods R and P, when combined 'with the sectors B B" and calo-plates C and N, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
EZRA\ SPRINGER Witnesses:
