DOG-RELEASING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 680,268, dated August 13, 1901.
Application filed March 23, 1901. Serial No. 52,576.- (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH E. NIGHTIN- GALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danvers, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dog-Releasing Devices for Machines for Measuring Areas of Surfaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dog-releasing devices for machines for measuring areas of surfaces of the kind shown and described in the patent granted to me September 4, 1900, No. 657,444, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a partial top plan view of a machine for measuring areas of surfaces provided with my improved dog-releasing device. Fig. 2 represents a partial end elevation and cross-section of such a machine, showing the improved dog-actuating mechanism in position for holding the dogs interlocked with the segmental gears. Fig. 3represents a similar view showing the said dogs released from said segmental gears, and Fig. 4 represents a side View, partly in section, of one of the said dogs.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, A A represent the upright end frames of a machine for measuring areas of surfaces, on which 0 is the work-supportin g table, D the feed-roller, and F F the measuring-wheels, attached to spindles f f and provided with pinions f like those shown and described in my aforesaid patent.
G G are the skeleton yokes, in which the measuring-wheel spindles are journaled, as usual.
N N are the toothed segments, adapted to intermesh with the measuring;wheel pinions f as long asthe hide or skin P passes between the feed-roller D and under side of the respective measuring-wheels F F.
H is the front cross-bar, and L is the back cross-bar, as usual in machines of this kind.
Z -Z Z are brackets secured to the back bar L, and in said brackets is journaled the pawlshaft "2', upon which the pawls or dogs M M are pivotally arranged, so as to normally ensgage the segments N N in a manner like that shown and described in my aforesaid patent. The said pawls or dogs M are normally held by gravity in engagement with the segments N N and are released by rocking the shaft Z, causing its pins or projections l to come in contact with the ends of recesses m m in the hubs of said pawls like that shown and 'described in my patent aforesaid.
In connection with a machine of this kind I use my improved dog or pawl releasing device, which is constructed as follows: To the top portion of the front cross-bar H is secured a plate or bracket I, to which is pivoted at 1 a lever K, provided, preferably, with a handle 70 in its free end, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
To the rear of said lever is pivotally connected at r a preferably curved link or rod R, which after passing freely over one of the measuring-wheels F is pivotally connected at its rear end 1" to a short lever S, the hub of which is preferably adjustably secured to the pawlcarrying shaftl by means of a clamping-screw S and set-screw S, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Preferably in one piece with the lever S is made an arm or projection S which serves as a stop against the rear edge of the back bar L when the lever K is swung backward to the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position the pawls or dogs M are in mesh with the segments N. The arm or projection S thus serves as a stop to limit the movement of the lever K when swung backward. To said lever K is secured an adjustable set-screw K, which serves as a stop against the plate or bracket H, so as to limit the forward movement of the lever K when swung to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in which the pawls or dogs are held out of engagement with the segments N N. This my improved dog or pawl operating device is very advantageous on account of the lever K being arranged and located above the front bar H instead of below it, thus giving more ample,
space to the operator for manipulating the hide or skin when being introduced and guided between the feed-roller and measuring-wheels.
Normally the position of theparts composing the dog or pawl actuating device is that shown in Fig. 2, in which the said dogs or pawls M are in engagement with the toothed segments N during the hide or skin measuring operation. After the said hide or skin has entirely passed between the feed-roll D and measuring-wheels F F and its area'ascertained and automatically measured I release all the pawls or dogs simply by pulling the lever K in the direction of the arrow shown on it in Fig. 2 until it reaches the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, thus liberating the segments N and allowing them automatically to assume their normal position. (Shown in Fig. 2.) To bring the said pawls or dogs into engagement with the said segments previous to introducing a hide or skin between the feed-roll and measuring-wheels, I simply swing the lever K in the direction of the arrow shown on it in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I Wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- In an organized machine for measuring areas of surfaces, 2. dog-releasing device as described, consisting incombination, a handlever K, pivotally connected to the upper front bar of the machine, and provided with an adjustable stop device for limiting the forward adjustment of said hand-lever, an arm or projection, adj ustably secured to the pawlcarrying shaft, a link or rod pivotally connecting said hand-lever and arm, a stop arm or lever secured to said shaft and a series of dogs or pawls arranged on said shaft and adapted for engagement and disengagement relative to a series of toothed segments substantially as herein set forth.
