D. S. ASHANABROGK,l OF GREENCASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA.v
Letters Patent .Nof 92,106, lated June 29, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT. IN HAND-CARRIAGES.
The Schedule referred to in' these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom fit may concern y Be it known that I, D. S. SHANABROOK, of Greencastle, in the county of Franklin, and State of' Pennsylvauia, have invented certain new and useful In .provements' iu Hand-Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,.clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figurev 1 represents a perspective view, with one wheel removed;
Figure 2, a plan view; and
Figure 3, a plan view of the machine, inverted.
Similar letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
My invention relates to improvements in hand-carriages and to this end,
1t consists in the employment of crank, in combination with cog-wheels, and such other devices, the peculiarit-y oi' which will be hereinafter' fully described.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings- A represents the carriage,
b, the axle-tree, and
B B, the wheels.
The axle-tree, inside the carriage, is made square, and on the square part are secured the cog-wheels (t b c.
On each side of the wheel b', are secured the circular pieces, formed with projections a. a.
Over these projections is passed the wire7 c', which is bent around the lever c7, said lever being pivoted to the bottom of the carriage, and is provided with ,a spring, working into mortises formed in the end of the carriage, so that by moving the lever l from one mortise to the other, you change position ofthe wheel b on the shaft, or axle-tree b'.
f is a bar, or partition, secured to the bottom of the carriage, and to which is secured a lever, provided with a pawl, f', working into the cog-wheel g, secured on the axle-tree b.
The end of this lever is attached to the foot-lever 71, by the rod h. A
iis a similar lever, provided with a similar pawl,- and working into the cog-wheel rThe end of this lever is attached to the foot-lever h2, which is hinged to the carriage.
"j represent two upright bars, which are provided with the shafts j* j2.
Gn the shafts j are secured the cog-wheels H. Hl H2, working respectively in the wheels a b' c.
The wheel Lll is formed with a projection, into which works the rod p.
This rod is attached to the pivoted lever p', and is intended to throw the wheelll in and out of gear with the wheel b.
0n the shaft j2 are secured two cog-wheelsfk k', which gear with the wheels H H2.
Each of these wheels is provided with the pins kz k, the object ofwhich will be hereinafter described.
m represents a metal strap, one end of which is attached tothe shaft, or rather tothe sliding plate ou which the connecting-wheels n n slide. p
This strap is connected with the lever n, which slides upon a bar, secured to the upper end of the uprights jj, and by operating-this lever, any desired speed may be given to the carriage.
o o represent wheels, secured to the axle-tree, ou'
each side of the carriage, and is provided with a spring, o, and pawl o. e n
q represents a seat for the operator, andq, seats for passengers. 1 lr is a brake, made, as seen iu the drawing, for the purpose ot stopping the velocity of the machine.
s is an upright bnr, provided, at its upper end, with the hand-lever s, andatI its lower end, inside the carriage, with the foot-lever s2. v
The upright, s, is provided, outside the carriage,
with the bar,'or lever t, the object of which will be y hereinafter described.
tI representsthe tongue, made as seen in g. 3, and' provided, at its front end, with the forward asie-tree t2.
Ou each end of the axle-tree t2, is pivoted the secondary axle u, to each end of which is attached a rod, u', which connects with the lever t, as seen iu the drawing, g. 3.
By this arrangement, a perfect steering, or guiding- .apparatus is obtained.
Having thus described my invention,
ters Patent, is-
1. The gear-wheels a bc, H H1 H", arranged to op` erate in connection with pinions` rt a.' n nl, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. r1he slide upon which the wheels n n' work, in combination with the couplers, or projections a nl, and lever a, arranged to operate as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combinationJ and' arrangement of the gearwheels and pinions with levers (l and n, slide n, coup 1ers n', al', and lever p', all operating substantially in thc manner and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination oi' foot-levers h h2, with rods hv h1, pawls f f', and ratchet-wheelst g, all arranged to operate as and for the purpose speciiied.
5. The wheel o, provided with pawl o`l and spring o, arranged to operate iu connection with wheel B, when furnished with ratchet-wheels, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, A*
Witnesses z T. H. ALEXANDER, A. S. WORTH.
