DOOR-HAN GER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Application filed April 7, 1910. Serial No.'553,957.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER L. HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door-hangers of the type which provides for relative adjustability of the hanger mem bers and for quick and easy det-atchment from the door supported by the hanger. The especial object of the improvements forming the subject matter of this application for patent is to provide a hanger of strong and economical construction that can be adjusted, attached to and detached from a door through the use of a screw driver or similar tool in the hands of an unskilled person.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated my invention in an approved form in the following views Figure 1 is an elevational view of my improved hanger in operative connection with portions of hanger track, and door, the latter being sectionalized in part; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the door attaching members in operative relation but detached from the door; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the latch and latch-plate with the former in inoperative position; Fig, 5 is a View in elevation of the lower part of the lower hanger member; Fig. 6 is a view in elevation of the lower part of the upper hanger member.
Referring to the details of the drawing, 7 represents the upper member of the hanger, which consists of a piece of strap metal bent upon itself near its midlength to form a housing for the wheel 9 which sides 'of the member 7. This member is bent outwardly from the plane of the hous- The lower member 8 of the hanger is made from the same material as the upper member, its upper portion overlies the midportion of the member 7, and is provided with vertical slots 8 which are slidably engaged by rivets 1O fixed in and project-- ing from the outer face of the portion 7* of the upper member 7 The middle portion of themember 8 is bent inwardly at right-angles to form a shelf 8 which is parallel with and spaced from the shelf 7. The lower portion 8 of the lower hanger member-is in a line with the vertical axis of the wheel 9, and near its end is provided with a horizontal slot 8 and is notched at each edge to form shoulders 8 and a tongue 8. In addition to the connecting rivets 10, the members 7 and 8 are adjustably connected by a bolt 11, which passes through suitable openings in the shelves 8", 7 and carries a collar l1 which is secured to the bolt after it is inserted in the hole provided therefor in the shelf 8 and serves to prevent the bolt from being disconnected from said shelf. Said bolt also carries a nut 11 which engages the opening 7 in the portion 7 and is thereby held against turning when the bolt is screwed up or down.
12 represents a flat metal plate provided with a central longitudinal slot 12*, and with screw holes 12 to receive the screws by which it is attached to the upper edge of a door as 18 over a recess 18 cut therein. To the upper side of the plate 12 is pivoted by pivot 13 a latch 13 which is formed with a shoulder 13 on one edge, and with a tongue 13 on its free end. A small boss 14 is formed on the upper face of the plate 12 at a point that will cause it to engage the edge of the latch when the latter is in operative position, and hold it in such position until suflicient counter force is exerted such as would result from pushing against the tongue 13 with a screw-driver in the hands of a perso-n who could apply the tool through a suitable opening leading to the recess 18*.
The hanger is provided with a wooden track 16 having its upper edge shaped to conform to the tread of the wheel 9 which travels thereon, and is supported in a channel iron 17, fastened at suitable intervals to the wall by brackets 15, which are attached to the track by bolts 16.
From the foregoing description and inspection of the drawing the manner of attaching my improved hanger to a door will be readily understood by any one skilled in the art and when assembled the door may be easily detached from the member 18 by inserting a screwdriver or other similar tool into the recess 18 and forcing the latch out of its slot by exerting sufiicient pressure. The latch can be returned to'its operative position by using the same tool from the op posite side of the door.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a door-hanger, an upper member comprising a metal plate bent to form a wheel housing and having its lower portion slotted, extending below said housing and bent inwardly to underlie the wheel housing, a wheel mounted in said housing, a lower member comprising a metal plate having its upper portion slotted and adjustably connected with the said upper member, said lower member having a mid-portion at right angles to its upper and lower portions, the angular portions of both of said members having unthreaded openings therein and lying parallel to each other, a bolt passing through said openings, a nut carried by said bolt and engaging the slot in the upper memher, and means connecting said lower memher with a door.
2. In a door hanger, the combination of a wheel, an upper hanger member bent to form a housing for said wheel, the lower portion of said member extending horizontally beneath said housing, a lower member adjustably connected with said upper member, and having in its lower end a transverse slot, a door plate having a slot adapted to be engaged by the lower end of said door plate and having a stop on its under side, a latch pivoted on the under side of said door plate and constructed to engage the slot in the said lower member and the stop on said doorplate.
3. In a door hanger, the combination with a wheel, a hanger comprising hanger members adjustably connected, a door plate adapted to be secured to the upper edge of a door and having a slot adapted to be engaged by the lower end of said hanger, a latch pivoted upon the under side of said door plate, a shoulder on said latch adapted to engage a slot in the lower end of the hanger, and a stop on said door-plate for said latch.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PETER L. HOFFMAN.
