To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM Mars, a resident of Mount Oliver Borough, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detonating Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to detonating toys, and has special reference to such a device to be thrown from the hand to explode a cap or cartridge contained therein.
The object of my inventionis to provide a cheap, simple and efficient form of a detonating toy which will enable the explosion of a cap contained within the same when thrown from the hand, and through astring or cord connected to a spring oper: ated hammer and retained in the hand.
To these ends 'my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved detonating toy, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved detonating toy. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same showing the parts in position for operating. Fig. 3 is a like view showing the parts in position after operating. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the spring employed. Fig. 5 is alike view of the hammer employed.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawing.
As illustrated in the drawing, 1 represents the body portion, which is preferably of ball shape and formed of wood. At one side of the body portion 1 and extending within'the same for substantially onefourth of such body is the'slotted portion" 2, which connects with an'enlarged recessed portion 3 located centrally at one end of said body portion and extends back to a point substantially on a central line at right angles to said recessed portion. Connecting with the slotted portion 2 at about the center of the body portion 1 isthe passage- Specification of Letters Patent.

way 4, which leads through said body and .to a point diametrically opposite the recessed portion 3 in the same.
Operating within the slotted portion 2 of the body 1 is the hammer 5, which is pivotally mounted at one end 5' within said slot by a pin 6, while its opposite or free end 5 is adapted to extend into the recess 3 and has a finger piece 7 projecting out from the same, so asto extend beyond the face of the ball body when the hammer is in its closed position for raising the same. Within the slot 2 is a flat spring 8, which is bent into U-shape, so that one side or arm 8 of the same will rest against the wall of said slot by its bent end 8*, and the other side or arm 8 will rest against the end 5 on the hammer 5 in its closed position, which will hold said spring in place, while in the open position of said hammer an inclined portion 6 on said end 5 will engage with such spring side 8 and compress the same.
A cord 9 held in the hand of the operator passes through the passageway 4 and is connected to the end 5 of the hammer 5 through a hole 9 in said end, and a capsupporting plate 10 is positioned within and cent-rally across the recess 3 in the body 1.
The use and operation of my improved detonating toy is as follows The usual paper cap a is placed in the recess 3 of the body 1 and against the plate 10 therein, as shown in Fig. 2, where it is held in any suitable manner, such as by its edges engaging the walls of said recess, and with the hammer 5 having been previously thrown back, as shown in said Fig. 2, and compressing the spring 8 by its end face 6, the device is ready or operating. This is accomplished by throwing the device from the hand of the operator and holding with such hand the free end of the cord 9, so that when the device in being thus thrown has reached the length of such cord it will cause the attached end of the cord on the hammer 5 to draw in the end 5 of said hammer and thus release the tension on the spring 8 by the face 5* on such hammer, to throw the said end against the cap a and explode the same.
The spring 8 is removable by withdrawing the pin 6 to remove the hammer 5, so that the parts are all easily removed and assembled.
It will thus be seen that my'improved detonating toy is composed of few and durable parts, which are not liable to get out of order or displaced from usage or shocks caused by the explosion of the cap, and yet by simply removing the pivotal pin employed the hammer and spring can be easily and quickly removed, if desired, while in the case of the breaking of the cord or string employed it can be easily and quickly passed through the device and connected to the hammer. The device is harmless and not liable to injure the person operating the same or those near by when the cap is exploded, on account of the cap being confined within the device and will not permit of an annoying loud explosion. It can be conveniently and easily set for operation and can be set and operated quickly and readily when desired by a child with safety and amusement.
Various modifications and changes in the design and construction of my improved detonating toy may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A detonating toy comprising a body portion having a passageway and a slotted portion therein, a cap-supporting plate mounted in a recess in said body and said slotted portion, a pivoted spring opera-ted hammer within the slotted portion of said body portion, and a cord passing through said passageway and connected to said ham mer for releasing the hammer to permit it to strike against a cap on said plate.
2. A detonating toy comprising a body portion having a slotted portion therein, a pivoted hammer within said body, a U-shaped spring within said slotted portion engagingv with one end of said hammer, and a cord connected to the other end of said hammer for releasing the same to permit said hammer to strike against a cap within said body.
3. A detonating toy comprising a body portion having a slotted portion therein and a passageway in said body leading from said slotted portion to and opening on one side of said body, a pivoted hammer within the slotted portion of said. body, a U-shaped spring within said slotted portion engaging with said hammer, and a cord passing through said passageway and connected to said hammer for releasing the hammer to permit it to strike against a cap within said body.
4. A detonating toy comprising a body portion having a slotted portion therein, a cap-supporting plate mounted in a recess in said body and said slotted portion, a pivoted hammer within the slotted portion of said body, a U-shaped spring within said slotted portion engaging with the rear end of said hammer, and a cord connected to the front end of said hammer for releasing the same to permit said hammer to strike against a cap on said plate.
5. A detonating toy comprising a body portion having a slotted portion therein and a passageway in said body leading from said slotted portion to and opening on one side of said body, a cap-supporting plate in said body, a pivoted hammer within the slotted portion of said body, a U-shaped spring within said slotted port-ion engaging with said hammer, and a cord passing through said passageway and connected to said hammer for releasing the same to permit said hammer to strike against a cap on said plate.
