DEVICE FOR REMOVING DUST FROM ASHES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. GOMSTOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Removing Dust from Ashes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for furnaces and more particularly to the ordinary furnace used in heating systems for dwellings; and its object is to provide a device intended to be connected in cooperative relation with the smoke stack of the furnace and with the ash pit thereof whereby the fumes and dust from ashes removed from the furnace will pass up into the smoke stack and be carried off with the smoke and unconsumed products of combustion.
The invention embodies an attachment which is simple in construction which may be readily and conveniently attached to the furnace and which consists of a receptacle connected to the smoke stack and adapted to receive the ash can or box and a hood arranged over the ash pit door and communieating with the receptacle so as to suck the dust and fumes arising from the ashes as they are removed from the furnace.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this invention and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a furnace showing the attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the attachment showing the receptacle mounted in the casing. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation showing the front of the casing removed. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section taken on line M of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a furnace in this instance shown to be the ordinary hot air furnace and provided with a smoke stack 2 and ash pit door 3.
The attachment comprises a casing consisting of a base 4:, a semi-circular back plate 5, a hood 6 preferably in the form of a frustum of a cone and the removable Specification of Letters Patent.

front plate 7 which is removably seated upon the base plate 4 between the same and the hood 6, the latter element being provided with an abutting collar 8 against which the front plate is adapted to rest when in operative position. The front plate is provided with hooks 9 which engage over headed studs 10 on the back plate so as to connect these parts together and is provided with an opening 11 of sufficient size to insert the ashes by means of a shovel or otherwise, into a receptacle 12.
The upper end of the hood 6 is provided with a collar 13 upon which a pipe 14; is mounted and the upper end of this pipe is connected in any suitable manner to the smoke stack 2 of the furnace. A suitable damper 15 is mounted within the length of the pipe, and extending diagonally from its side below the damper is a collar 16 to which is attached a small pipe 17 whose lower end is connected to a dust receiving hood 18. This hood is supported directly above the ash pit door upon the leg carried by the hood and has its outer edge flared outwardly, as shown at 20, so as to prevent the dust being removed from flying around and to form an enlarged opening into the hood and pipe 17.
The receptacle 12 when seated upon the base 4 is below the opening 11 and as the dust from ashes being deposited therein, arises it is caught in the draft through the opening to the pipe 14. Any fumes or dust arising from the ashes as they are removed from the ash pit will be sucked up in the hood 18 and carried to the pipe 1 1 and from thence to the smoke stack. Then the operation of removing the ashes is completed the damper 15 is closed so that the draft through the attachment will not affect the draft of the furnace.
lVhile a simple form of the invention has been illustrated herein it is to be clearly understood that the shape and size may be modified as may be desired without departing in any way from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus described the inventiomwhat I claim as new is In combination, a furnace having a smoke "the pipe below the damper.
