Be it known that I, VILLIAM R. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVallace, in the county of Shoshone an'd State of Idaho,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to shields for protecting the lower panel of a piano in order to prevent the same from being scratched or marred by the feet of the player, the object of said invention being to vprovide a protecting device which may be readily placed in position and which, when the instrument is not in use may be conveniently closed.

Vith these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood thatt-he changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a piano showing the shield in position. Fig. 2 a view of the device detached, and Fig. 3 a view showing the device in its closed position.

In the drawing: 10 designates a metallic member which is secured to the lower panel 11 of a piano at a pointI adjacent its upper edge. The member 10 is provided with the offset ears 12 and 13 which are adapted to support a spring roller 14. This spring roller has mounted thereon a plurality of clips 15 which are adapted to embrace a rod 16 to which is secured the pad or shield 17 which may be of any desired, flexible material. The lower edge portion of said pad is provided with a rod 18, which is partially covered by the pad. The pad is provided with a centrally arranged cut awa-y portion 19, the portion of the rod adjacent said cut away portion, being covered with a `resilient material 18. trally on the rod in order to facilitate the positioning of the pad.

In placing the device in the position shown in Fig. 1, the pad is drawn downward against the tension of the spring roller unt-il the cut away portion of said pad is in alinement with the pedals 21 of the instrument. The lower edge of the pad is now forced toward the instrument, the covered portion of the rod 18 being allowed to rest against the under face of t-he said pedal and being held in engagement with said pedals by t-he spring roller 14. Then the instrument is not in use the pad is forced downward by means of the tab 2O and the rod 18 removed from engagement with the pedals. The tab is then released and the device assumes the position shown in Fig. 3.

It will be seenY from the foregoing that a device of this character will not only prevent the feet of the operator from coming in contact with the lower panel of the piano, but the same is so constructed as to give the instrument a neat appearance. `The fact that the rod 18 is covered with a resilient material at the point where it engages the edals will assure an absolutely noiseless adjustment. The said resilient covering also preventing any sound which might arisel from vthe depression of the pedals.

What is claimed is: 1. A piano protector comprising a bracket arranged adjacent the pedals, a roller supported by said bracket, a shield of flexible material secured to said roller and adapted to be drawn down to the pedals of the piano, means for holding the roller yieldably with the shield wound thereon, said shield being provided with a cut-away portion through which the pedals of the instrument may eX- tend, and a rod incased by the lower edge portion of said shield, said rod being adapted to engage the under face of said pedals, to hold the shield in an extended position against the tension of the roller-holding mea-ns.
