SCISSORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912.
Original application filed April 17, 1909, Serial No. 490,484. Divided and this application filed. October 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNIE HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewistown, in the county of Fergus and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scissors especially designed for use by dressmakers and it is a division of an application filed April 17, 1909, and which issued on June 14 1910, as Patent No. 961,235.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide the scissors with handles carrying marking devices which are compactly and conveniently arranged so as to be readily used with but little manipulation in order to bring the parts into operative position.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood thatchanges in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without de parting from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of a pair of scissors or shears having the present improvements combined therewith, portions of the handles being shown in section. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the handle portions of the shears. Fig. 3 is a section on line AB, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line CD Fig. 1.
1 and 2 designate the blades of the scissors, the blades being pivotally connected and provided with handles 3 and 4:. Handle 3 has a finger ring 5 which, in the present instance, is circular, and formed in the marginal portion of this ring is an annular groove 6 one end wall of which has apocket 7 therein while the opposite end portion of the groove is covered by a retaining spring 8 secured to the handle 3 in any suitable manner. A curved piece of chalk 10 or other marking material, is seated within the groove 6 and has a tongue 11 at one end adapted to project into the pocket 7 while another tongue 12 extends from the other end of the chalk marker and is adapted to be lapped and retained by the spring 8. The marker 10 projects beyond the marginal portion of the ring 5.
Serial No. 586,770.
The handle 4 is provided with a tubular finger ring 13 and an annulus 14 is housed within this ring and is adapted to rotate therein, the outer periphery of the annulus being formed with a continuous series of spurs 15. The outer edge of the finger ring 1 1 is cutaway for a portion of its length, as indicated at 16 so that a few of the teeth 12 are constantly exposed.
By providing scissors such as described, the same canbe conveniently used for the purpose of marking, the spur annulus 14: being always ready for use as a tracing wheel, or for such other purposes for which these devices may be used.
The marker 10 on the ring 5 is also at all times ready for use, but, since the marker is subject to wear as. a result of such use, it may be readily removed when worn down to the ring and a new piece substituted by a proper manipulation of the spring 8.
What is claimed is 1. A pair of scissors having an annular groove in one of the finger rings of the handles, and a marking device seated within the groove and project-ing beyond the ring.
2. A pair of scissors having an annular groove in one of its finger rings, and a marking device mounted for movement within and projecting beyond the groove.
3. A pair of scissors having an annular groove in the peripheral portion of one of its finger rings, and a curved marker movably mounted within and projecting from the groove.
4. A pair of scissors having a finger ring upon one of its handles, and an annular spur wheel housed in said ring, and extending therethrough.
5. A pair of scissors including a finger ring upon one of the handles, said ring being tubular and having a cut-away portion, and an annular spur wheel mounted for rotation within said ring and having a portion thereof projecting from the cut-away portion.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ANNIE HOPKINS. Witnesses:
JAMES E. HOPKINS, BERTRAM P. BERGER.
