GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 30, 1911.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912.
Serial No. 657,557.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN BLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenyon, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in gates, and more particularly to a farm gate, and my object is to provide a device of this character which may be moved vertically to allow various animals to make their exit and at the same time prevent others from escaping and also to provide a gate which is capable of a swinging movement to permit a person to conveniently open and close the same so as to pass therethrough.
A further object of the invention resides in providing means to guide the gate in its vertical movement, which means will also prevent the gate from being swung on its pivot at times other than those provided for such swinging movement.
A still further object of the invention resides in providing a vertical post upon which the gate is pivotally mounted, said post being provided with an elongated slot, and a further object resides in providing means in connection with the gate adapted to enter the slot to prevent the rotation of the gate on the bar and simultaneously providing means for the vertical movement of the gate.
Another object of the invention resides in providing lateral slots communicating with said vertical slot, whereby the gate may be given a swinging movement.
.A still further object resides in providing a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, whereby the same may be readily and cheaply manufactured, and one which is very eflicient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects inview, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section as seen on line 3-3, Fig. 1, and, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the one sleeve member of the gate which has a means thereon to prevent the gate from swinging.
In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the. drawing in which similar refer-' ence characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a post of any desired form, from which extend the upper and lower brackets 2, and secured in said brackets is a metallic bar or rod 3 extending vertically of the post 1. A gate 4 formed of a piping frame 5 and a wire body 6, is provided on the inner end thereof with an upper and lower sleeve 7 and 8, respectively, which sleeves are loosely mounted on the bar 3 in order to permit a vertical sliding and pivotal movement of the gate on said bar or rod 3.
In order to provide for the proper suspension of the gate from the post and a means whereby the same may be raised or lowered, a cable or the like 9 is secured to the free end of the gate 4 and extends upwardly over one of a pair of pulleys 10 which are carried in a frame on the upper end of the bar 3 and then extends downwardly over another pulley 11 carried on the inner end of the gate 4. The cable is then continued upwardly over the other of a pair of pulleys 10 and thence downwardly over a drum or the like 12 rotatably mounted on the inner end of the gate immediately adjacent the pulley, and extending from the drum, is a handle member or crank 13, whereby said cable may be wound or unwound manually upon said drum. The drum also has in connection therewith a ratchet 14 which is adapted to be engaged by a pawl or the like 15 'pivotally carried on the gate so that when the crank has been turned to raise the gate, said crank may be released and the gate allowed to remain in its adjusted position by the engagement of said pawl 15 with the ratchet 14.
As stated, the sleeves 7 and 8 are loosely engaged with the bar 3 in order to allow the gate 4 to be readily raised and lowered .and also swung therefrom when desired, but in order to prevent the gate from being given a swinging movement when the same is raised and lowered, the bar 3 is preferably formed hollow and provided with an elongated slot 16, while the sleeve 7 is provided with a stem or the like 17 which is adapted to entersaid slot 16. This stem. 17 which enters an opening in the sleeve 8 is threaded for a portion of its length and engaged on opposite faces of the sleeve 8 with the pair of nuts 18, whereby said stem may be readily removed or adjusted, as desired, and it will be seen that as the inner end of said stem enters the vertical slot 16 in the bar 4, the same will guide the gate in its vertical movement on said bar and simultaneously prevent the swinging movement of said gate during such vertical movement. There will, however, be times when it is desired to swing the gate in order that a person may be permitted to pass or to allow larger animals to make their exit, and to this extent, the lateral slots 20 are provided which communicate with the vertical slot 16, so that it will be seen when the gate is raised to a point wherein the stem 17 registers with the lateral slots 20, said gate may be given a swinging movement.
In practice, it will be appreciated that the gate is adapted to be positioned normally in its lowered position, asshown in Fig. 1, and under these conditions, said gate may not be given a swinging movement, in view of the stem 17 being entered in the vertical slot 16, and when it is desired to raise the gate for any purpose, whatsoever, such as for allowing certain of the animals on the farm to make their exit, the crank 13 is turned to wind the cable 9 upon the drum 12, and when a required. height has been reached, the gate may be allowed to remain in its raised position by the engagement of the pawl 15 with the ratchet 14. When it is desired to again lower the gate, the pawl 15 may be manually released from its engagement with the ratchet and the handle allowed to turn in an opposite direction through the weight of the gate itself, but should at any time, it be desired to swing the gate open, the same is raised until the stem 17 on the sleeve 8 registers with one of the slots 20, depending at what position the gate may be previously, whereupon the gate may be swung in either direction, outwardly or inwardly.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided an improved farm gate wherein means has been provided for both the vertical and swinging movement of the same, and itwill still further be seen that during the vertical movement of the gate, the same may not be swung in either direction.
It will still further be seen that by pro viding the stem on the sleeve of the gate, which stem enters a vertical slot in the post, the gate will be guided throughout its vertical movement and prevented from swinging during such movement, and it will still further be seen that by disposing the stem in the sleeve in such a manner, as described, that is by threading the stem and providing a pair of nuts on both sides of the sleeve, said stem may be adjusted to any length or readily removed when desired.
It will still further be seen that the device complete is one of simple and durable construction, and will be very efficient and useful in operation.
Although I have particularly described the features of the preferred form of my device, itwill be understood that the same is capable of Various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

3. In a gate construction, the combination with a post having a vertical slot therein and also provided with a lateral slot communicating with the vertical slot; of a gate slidably arranged 011 said post, means to raise and lower said gate on the post, and a stem carried on said gate and normally entering the vertical slot of said post to guide the gatein its vertical movement, said stem being also adapted to enter the lateral slot of the post when brought into registration therewith.
4. In a gate construction, the combination' with a post having a vertical slot therein; of a swinging gate slidably mounted on said post, means to raise and lower said gate, means carried on the gate entering the vertical slot of the post to prevent the swinging movement of the gate during the sliding movement thereof, and additional means in connection with said slot to allow said gate to be swung at predetermined points on the post. p
5. In a gate construction, the combination with a post, a, hollow bar carried thereby and spaced therefrom, said bar being provided with a vertical slot and also having a lateral slot in communication with the vertical slot; of a gate provided with sleeves registration therewith to allow said gate to slidably arranged on said bar, means to be swung on the bar. 10 raise and lower said gate on the bar, and a In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my stem carried on one of said sleeves normally signature in the presence of two witnesses. entering the vertical slot of the bar to guide EDWIN BLY.
